Hey Mike diamond and all you error guru's,,,,,,help me out on this state quarter. There are several similiar ones out there but none are exactly identicle I believe. These lines are just a little bit out of place on each coin. Each line is just as prominent on obverse and reverse and is the mirror image as if you squeezed the quarter with needle nose pliers and marks came out on both sides. But,,,of course in this case,,there was some serious tonage put on these coins. Any harder of a strike and this would have been cut right through. Now I know that post mint damage would make the metal very shinny at the point of the damage as if scrapeing metal with your knife does,,,,,but,, these lines when magnified has the exact same luster down inside the error as does the fields or devices. I'm sure it came from the mint but these coins came out of some orange and white bu rolls from the bank. Anyone recognize what these marks could have been caused by?? Also is it error or damage??? Also Idea's to value???? Also does NGC grade this type of thing or are we looking at a body bag??? Lots of questions but these are awesome higher grade coins that I just have to research. Please,,,,any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Haven't posted in awhile so if these photo's do not upload just check back later and I will shrink and try again but if viewable,,,,check 'em out. bigd
Just an attempt at a little humor. Computers are very impersonal. A certain phrase can have two totally different meanings depending on ones tone of voice and a computer can not make that distinction. besides I am a qualified sharpshooter so If I were takeing a shot,,,I would have done more damage.lol. Take care. bigd
not to worry... i too am using a little humor *that's why i used the little smile icon* as with the original post... i still can't see the images. will be glad to finally see what you have :hail:
Well,I see the pics now but I can't help you on this kind of thing.I'll still take a geuss.....(damage).Tell us what it is Bill.I'm anxious to find out. B12
I think I see some in-groove details, especially inside the 2nd from the left "drill" mark.... I'd say it was done after the mint, with a vice/press or a nice set of pliers.
I'll try to attach photo's again. I can view the pictures fine in this thread. Its to bad the system has been down but hopefully these will be viewable for ya'll. Thanks so far. Bigd
No doubt about it. The only way a drill bit could do that type of damage would be if the coin and something else were clamped together, and the junction was drilled; but realistically, there's no way that could be done to match so precisely on both sides of the coin - especially at four different places and angles.
I see the pics now.......I'm going with the post mint damage people. With the metal sticking out from the edge of the coin where the tool marks are, there is no doubt in my mind it was damaged. The pattern in the damage is repeated in each of the marks, it has to be some kind of tool.
