What you're seeing is due to the damage. Keep in mind that anytime you have a coin with major damage problems, any thing that looks different or unusual is nearly always due to the damage.
Or put it this way. If you have to compare it from a mint error to damage it will most likely be damaged. Even environmental damage. It's the way I put it now.
People show up with a coin have 6 , 8 or 10 errors. What's more likely 6 occurrences of a one in a million event, or 6 occurrences of a 1 in 1 event from damage in circulation?
