I have a wheat penny that looks like that...Cept it's bout the size of a dime...Never have had it checked out though...
I am thinking of taking it with me to a local coin show in Dedham MA this coming Sunday to have some dealers look at it. They will have a better idea than I.
One thing I would do if I were you though, look at the edge of the coin very closely, to make sure there are no traces of it being filed down or anything...
Here'a a few halves struck on wrong plabchets: LINK #1 LINK #2 LINK #3 LINK #4 Seems like the OP's coin is at least worth having looked at by an error expert. JMO
Hi guys, I remember a lot of you from the PCGS coin forum. The general opinion over there was send it to ANAC.
Just got back from a local coinshop with the above coin. The dealer told me that coin did look like it was struck on a quarter planchet. He said he couldn't give me a value of the coin because it does not have a date on it but did refer me to an error specialist. I think I am goin to keep the coin though, kind of a neat item to have.
That's good news. It's always better to see the coin in person, than to look at a picture. Glad to hear you're going to keep it.
The funny think is I don't really know how I came accross the coin. I have been collecting on and off for about 20 years and over the years friends and family have given me coins. Most of the US coins I put in flips and albums but most of the foriegn coins I throw in a junk coin box. Every once in a while I go through the junk coin box to see if there is anything in there that I missed. When I was going through the box last weekend I pulled the above coin out. So this coin may have been sitting in the box for a while. Hard to tell though without a date.
Sweet! looks legit to me. Did your dealer weigh it? If it weighs the same as a quarter then it's most likely real. It looks like a silver era coin .. is this correct? Jason
