I have a 1972 Philadelphia mint penny that has something screwy going on with the number 9 in the date.

It doesn't look like a dd and I cant find any information on anything else that looks like it. Can anyone tell me what us going on with this penny?

It looks like it took a hit in circulation after it left the mint. PMD (post mint damage). It is not a mint error.

Maybe it got hit with a Telefunken U47 in Joe's garage;)

Life of a coin is very harsh. They are not treated well and they get banged around intentionally and unintentionally causing all kinds of damage.

Right on. It just looks so weird! Someone must have took a pencil erasure to it to really make that smoosh pop out and shine.
