I checked out the 2005 Standard Catalog of Coins. I have 2 Mexican pesos in my collection. KM#604, I'm very sure. But the year is CLEARLY 1997 (take a look at the pictures yourself) and my book states these pesos were only minted 1996,1998,2001,2002. It has the Mo mint mark and everything. Is my coin rare? :hail:
Notify michaelt@krause.com. The SCWC is far from perfect, and they are very happy to receive corrections and updates. Sending a picture of your coin to Tom, showing the date, would be a good idea.
Correct email address for Krause; michaelt@krause.com .Roy had typed it out wrong,as he left the letter 'a' out by mistake. Aidan.
Just because it isn't perfect doesn't mean it isn't very useful. There are hundreds of specialty works out there, some good, some bad, some current, some outdated, etc. I primarily use my Japanese specialty library for Japanese related coins; I use Charlton for Canadian Coins; I use the Red Book, among other references, for US coins; but when it comes to the vast amount of coinage that I don't have specialty books about, I fall back on Krause. Except for the 2003 30th Ed., its not really that bad.
Roy,don't forget that there is 2 Krause catalogues for coins since 1901 - 1901-2000 & 2001 onwards. The 21st Century catalogue is coming out in November this year.It will be good if every coin is illustrated in this book. Aidan.
Frankly I'm leery about that one. Krause seems to make the most mistakes when they have a major redo, as they did in 2003.
Roy,if you are collecting Euro coins,or any other coins issued this century, you will need this book. Aidan.
I'm on a small budget, so I'll be very lucky to find any of these specialty books in my library. Thank you everyone.
If you mean the new Krause volume, I'll wait for the second edition in hopes that they'll correct most of the screwups I anticipate seeing in a major redo. And for my primary love, I'll still rely principally on the Japanese Numismatic Dealers Association annual catalog! The only Euros I collect are single examples from each country for my "one from every" collection.
Roy,the only Euro coins that are really in my line are the ones from Ireland, because Ireland is a British Commonwealth-associated country whose coins are still popular with British Commonwealth coin collectors such as myself. Aidan.
The first countries that are actually members of the Commonwealth (Cyprus, Malta) will not join the European Currency Union until 2008, maybe 2009. Several euro coins will be in the "20th century" edition too. Belgium, Finland, France, Netherlands and Spain all have euro and cent coins dated 1999 ... Christian
Christian,no Euro coins are listed in the 20th Century edition. This has a black cover with coins from Sri Lanka & Southern Rhodesia on the front. You will be surprised when you go back & look at your 2007 Krause. Aidan.
Ah, thanks for letting me know, Aidan. Guess I will follow Roy's advice and wait for next year's version then ... Christian
The 21st Century catalogue will have them in.You can place your order with www.amazon.com ,but they aren't being shipped until November. Aidan.
