Saw this partial clad layer / lamination. 40% of the layer is gone. I am guessing it was a clam shell that had some help, because there appear to be marks that scratched the core to the right of it. The scratches (if they are in fact scratches) are horizontal and close to the center, which is exactly where you would want to stick a small, flat head screwdriver to insert and then try to lift the clad layer off. Am I way off here in thinking this? And if it really is that obvious, why did PCGS slab it, and/or why wasn't it given a details grade for scratches at least? (Again, maybe they aren't scratches and I am just seeing things, but the upper-most one near the "T" definitely looks like one of all the marks).
I agree . . . the mark near the "T" is PMD. The line behind the nape of Kennedy's neck looks to me like it is as-struck.
Ok. I am now 99% certain these are scratches from a tool that someone used to forcefully separate this clad layer. Looks like marks from a pin. Notice along the torn edge how it is raised in spots, likely because the rest of the clad layer wasn't going to come off, and it started bending. The scratches are even going the right way if one were to try and force it off. In my opinion, this photo below speaks for itself. Again, why is it not listed as damaged or scratched on the label?
Yeah, after seeing this latest image I've had a most definite change of heart. Someone tampered with a nice error coin for additional profit and ruined it in the process.
