Hello CT readers. I would like to have your opinion on error coins' value and how much would you willing to spend? I am interesting to collect some off-center error coins. The problem with ebay, too many off-center coins with BIN, not auction and they charge them for premium price. I know off-center coins with date showing are better value than no date on off-center coin, but I want to avoid shell out my funds on off-center coins in premium price. I would like to know how do you determine fair value on them? Thanks.

Even though the listings you mentioned have BIN's, that still doesn't mean you can't contact the seller and make a lower offer. However, if you're idea of value differs too greatly, you probably won't have much luck. Let me ask you this, "If it was you selling them, wouldn't you want to get the best price possible?"

Chris: I agree with you to see myself as seller. You are correct on negotiate with seller. However, few of BIN does have better offer and I usually use that option, but most of them are BIN without best offer. I wonder if it's OK to talk with seller through contact link to see if they are willing to reduce the price? My experience with comic books and sports in that method wasn't favorable. I usually got complaint or no respond from seller for trying to negotiate without BIN's best offer. I wonder if there is any site with value on off-center coins or complete listing from eBay would be a best tool to search for complete auction value on off-center coins?

Value, is what you feel comfortable with.

If you're new, it's best to watch a few listings and see where they end and how they end.
If you want to get a professional opinion on value, get an account on Heritage and start watching off-center error listings.

As for off center errors, just like any other coin, the higher the grade on the off-center, the higher the value. Some of the junk which gets schlepped off on ebay are fairly low grade coins which is why most show up with BIN's instead of actual listings. An actual listing would attract minimal bids and end up selling fairly low and these sellers know it. A professionally graded, high grade off-center coin will have no problem attracting serious bidders.

Something else that adds to the value is the percentage of off center. A 10% Off Center would sell or less than say a 20%. Also keep in mind, that even the TPG's differ on how to calculate off center percentages. I've seen 5% and 10% that appear identical.

I think the best advice is to simply shop around and be patient. You also might want to check out Fred Weinberg on eBay since he's been in the business since before bread was sold sliced and he really knows his stuff.

19Lyds: Thank you for tips. Yes, I have notice regarding to 5 percent off-center vs 10 percent off-center coins. I have my own opinion and see many 10 percent off-center coins that should be 5 percent off-center coins. At this time, I am focus on 40 percent to 70 percent off-center coins. Of course, with date is what I am searching. :)
