What is the best way to tell that a coin has an error from the mint as opposed to an outside force such as circulation or someone just defacing one? If I was to search through a bunch of pennies that I have already pulled the Wheaties out of, what exactly is the best way to search without having to sift through all the "normal" wear and tear a coin in circulation goes through? sorry if this is confusing!

In my opinion there is no easy way. It's a learning thing that takes time. The more you do it the better you get. No shortcuts.

    Correct!
You should also learn how coins are minted. Knowing that makes it so much easier to tell what is an error and what is damage.
