I found this in with my change, I though it was really dirty, well it was at first, I used some hand soap and warm water, then I got a better look at it. I'm guessing maybe there was dust or moisture or something on the zinc before the copper plating? Don't know for sure. Anyways its a 1997 Canadian one-cent coin. One of about 506,928,000 minted that year. This was the first year the Canadian Mint started copper plating zinc, instead of using 98% copper for the pennies. So here's some pics, its basically just kinda ugly, like a penny with bad acne. I'll hang on to it regardless of what its worth, but does this kind of 'error' add to the value? (like 5 cents instead of 1 cent, hehe) And what would this kind of error be called? Im new here so thanks for any help!
Howdy dopeuser - Welcome to the Forum !! I sure hope you wear rubber gloves when handling that coin - that thing has the pox I've never seen anything quite like it except for a few cast counterfeits. But I doubt that's the case here. But it certainly looks like air bubbles in the plating. I rather doubt it would any value. Most would consider it damage I think.
Looks like aftermint damage to me. Like being runover by a car or whatnot. Don't quote me on that, though. I'm no expert. vger
