Here is a Russian 2 Kopek from my collection. The letter П on the obverse is upside down. Does anyone know the story behind this error?
Here is another example for comparison. I think there is a definite difference in where the two bars of the П are joined.
Hi Oldman Do you mean that the symbols shown on the two coins are two different characters in Russian? If they are, in fact, the same character why should the engraver deliberately join the two | | (using the _ ) at the bottom in one coin and at the top in another? (This is assuming that lettering on all such coins was done using partial punches till about 1844-1845.)
Oldman, I can assure you, it's not a common error. The letter "P" is upside down and out of the tens of samples that I own, NONE of them are punched in that way. The same coin was discussed in coinpeople.
