Hi, I'm new to Cointalk. I have been collecting since I was a kid but just started getting serious a couple of years ago. I found this error nickel in a roll from the bank and was wondering if anyone can give me an opinion about how rare it is, is it worth more than a nickel :smile, etc. I first thought it had some glue on the corner and looked under my magnifying glass to see it was an actual error. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and thanks for having me on Cointalk! Todd
Welcome to the neighborhood, Todd! It's hard for me to tell because your photo is a little blurry for my poor eyes, but it might be a lamination defect on the planchet or a strikethrough. In any event, it would only be worth a premium to the right person. Chris
Hi Todd and welcome to the forum. When you said you thought it was glue I believe you may have got it right,Sometimes dried clear glue can trick all of us at first glance. a magnifying glass will make the glue look even more convincing. Try some fingernail polish remover and a q-tip to see if this will soften it up any.
Nope, its not glue. It is indented with a clear line where it was stamped and definitely an error. Thanks for looking though. I have no clue as to the origin or type of the error.
Rascal, I took your advice and used a little rubbing alcohol and I have to apologize, you are correct. Though it didn't remove the glue it brought out the details. Its glue, a really, really hard glue but glue all the same. There goes my thrill of the day In to the coin jar it goes, maybe I can give someone else a thrill. Thanks again for looking. At least I didn't try to sell it and make a fool of myself (more than I already did).
Hey don't feel bad , these coins with glue on them sometimes tricks the best of us. I have collected error coins over 40 years and sometimes I really have to look at these closely because the glue can make a coin look like a real error. These are sold on ebay quite often .I'm glad you asked before trying to sell it,you did the right thing.
