Hi all. A friend of mine who works at the Post office recently received this £2 in a sack of coinage from the bank. Its dated 2008 and looks to be totally silver in colour. It weighs 11.60gm which is 0.4gm less than the official weight. Can I assume from this that it is some sort of Royal mint error?
Very interesting. I can't say it could be plated because it weighs less than the 12.0 grams it should be. Here is something that might be related https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/4137433/rare-two-pound-coin-same-metal-money/amp/
Thanks for that. I read somewhere that someone had found something similar and sent it to the Royal mint who concluded it had probably been plated although who would want to plate a £2 is beyond me. However a plated coin would weigh the same or maybe a little more than the standard issue weight and this one is definitely 0. 4 under (I checked on a couple of scales ).
