    why do i feel like the e is the only ddl

    No DD, looks like combo of MD and die deterioration. Notice how the base of the Illusionery 'E' reaches from the base of the true 'E' to well above the true 'E'. A sign of die deterioration/ and some MD seems to affect the other letters also, but much less. A doubled letter or device should be same size as original.

    Another clue about the Die Deterioration, look at the other letters and they seem to be hollowed out.. Great example of one though.. Its a keeper so you can teach the next generation of E/V collectors.

    What gets me is the deep vertical furrows on most of the letters and what seems to be extra thickness while maintaining well defined edges. How do those furrows get there?

    thats just the way that die wore out, lots of variables, die hardness, planchet hardness, improper annealing, distinct signs of deterioration are there as mentioned above, around the "E", above "PLURIBUS", around the dot left of unum, thickened an hollowed out letters.....
