How many of you are aware that some of the P.O.W. & internment camps in England issued their own notes? Here's proof; www.londoncoins.co.uk/Images/Auc16 Cat pics/L57.jpg & www.londoncoins.co.uk/Images/Auc16 Cat pics/L58.jpg . Aidan.
thats kinda interesting, i was unaware the POW camps did that .. at least it was a friendly camp, unlike the German POW were... Thanks for the liks Aidan
The Aussies also had a series of banknotes, which were issued by the Camp Seven Bank in Hay Internment Camp,New South Wales. These notes are extremely rare. I have a 1/- & a 2/- that was prepared for,but not issued at,the Green Point Track Camp,Cape of Good Hope during the 2nd. Boer War (1899-1902).They're the only P.O.W. banknotes I have got so far. Aidan.
These notes were printed by the War Department and used in all of the British POW camps. Each camp was assigned a number which was put in the Camp of Issue line on the note usually by rubber stamp. A list of the British POW camps and their numbers can be found at http://www.islandfarm.fsnet.co.uk/LIST OF UK POW CAMPS1.htm Notes for the internment camps were issued by the Home Office and have the letters HO in the underprint. The internment camp notes are significantly more scarce than the POW notes. The British in East Africa also issued a set of notes for use in the POW camps located there. In the United States, chits that look like small tickets were used as scrip in the POW camps and internment camps. They came in booklets. POWs in the US camps were paid 80 cents per day for labor. They were paid with the chit booklets which they could use to purchase items at the camp POW canteens. They could also bank their pay. At the end of the war they were given checks in dollars for the balance of their accounts. These checks could only be cashed by US military finance personnel in their home country. France, Italy and Germany also issued notes for use in POW camps. Ireland and Switzerland issued notes for internment camps also.
There were also internment camps in both Cyprus & the Isle of Man that also issued their own notes as well. The Onchan Internment Camp was better known for its few coins though. James, thanks for that link about the British P.O.W. camps. Where were the Irish internment camps located? Aidan.
The internment camp in Ireland was at Curragh. I believe only tokens were issued there. The British also had POW camps and internment camps in India. Notes were used in the camps in India. I will put some links for scans of the various notes that I have from these camps this weekend.
James,India also issued P.O.W. banknotes during the 1960's & in 1971-72 during the 2nd. & 3rd. Indo-Pakistani Wars. The 3rd. Indo-Pakistani war led to the independence of Bangladesh as a British Commonwealth member state & as a republic. You should email some photos to the people at Funk & Wagnalls for listing in the Pick Specialised catalogue.P.O.W. banknotes are worth listing. I have never seen a priced catalogue of P.O.W. & internment camp banknotes yet. I am surprised that Switzerland even had internment camps,& even more surprised that they issued banknotes for use in the camps. Aidan.
Twiggs, the link to that document wouldn't open.I'll try accessing something through www.thempcman.net . Aidan.
Twiggs,it still wouldn't download.I got a message saying that it wouldn't download. It is possible that the other guy's system is incompatible with mine.I think that you should send him an email. Aidan.
I've posted a link to the British Commonwealth Numismatic Forum on that Island Farm Camp website.Yes,they do have a forum there.Hopefully, some of the British Commonwealth P.O.W. banknote, coin,& token collectors will join up. Aidan.
