While looking through the newest issue of Coin World, it appears that the US Mint is discontinuing the satin finish for the uncirculated mint sets. Starting in 2011, they will have the regular brilliant uncirculated finish instead. It's gonna be kind of odd, since only one year of ATB quarters will have the satin finish.
Personally, I am glad to get back to the regular circulation finish. I don't want presentation coins, I want a set of uncirculated coins from each year to keep my collection up to date.
Whoa! I gotta get a 2010 Mint Set soon! The 2010 Satin Finish ATB's have become a one-year type, when you think about it.
yes, but they said that there wouldn't be any THIS year and were incorrect. It appears that they have some inside info, but not necessarily always reliable. They shouldn't have used it as a selling point before the Mint confirmed it. they may now be on the hook for false advertising as well. If anyone who bought wants to sue, that is.
It would be my guess that the decision to discontinue the satin finish was due to the much shorter production life of the dies. They didn't hold up well to the constant use and were relegated to producing (crappy looking) business strikes after being repolished. Chris
Interesting ! 2010 one year type sets will have the only satin finish shield cents & park qtrs in them better get as many as we can for resale every cent collector will have to have one for there albums in order to complete them.
Are there that many desperate cent collectors? The same thing was said about the 2009 sets because that was the only way to get the MS copper 2009 cents. Yet the sales figure for the 2009 mint set is not that impressive.
Have never really been a fan of these, but now that they are officially ending I may just have to get some. TC
Time the Coin World gets to door its old history. I heard this thread last year. The Mint is making a bundle on mint sets this year Four more dollars and 8 less coins.
