does anyone think that about all the silver proof sets from 1999 and up that are being sold have been opened and had the s-proof clad coins put back in the pack.i have seen alot of boxes with no coins in them being sold and i don't think anyone would want a box with no coins.

    WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
I can't imagine purchasing anything without checking to see what is or isn't inside. From a departement store maybe, but not many other places.

Carl, if you buy a post 1998 silver proof set can you tell for sure if the coins are silver or clad without opening the case and taking the coins out? It can be done if you know how, but how many people know how?

I suppose you could weigh a known clad proof set and a known silver proof set, and compare both weights with the unknown set.

Here is what I think is going on.. Send off coins for grade and you have the box/COA etc... And you can sell ANYTHING on Ebay.. I saw Tiger Woods half chewed up apple core go for over 40K and an "100% Empty Pepsi Can" sell for 4200.00... so sell a box... why not..
I have purchased several Proof ASE.. got a great deal since they had no Velvet case and COA.. It was nice to be able to get them for the correct years on Ebay for near nothing (but time)..The local Coin shop may have the case but you will pay 5 bucks for it... Aaarrgggg! Coin Shops..
