I would like to know something more about the coin below. I suppose that it is from Greek colony in Spain Emporion (Emporiai). Weight ca 28 gram, diameter ca 40 mm. I will be glad for any help.
It's a modern replica of this type of coin: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=52878 Sale: CNG 67, Lot: 397. Estimate $15000. Closing Date: Wednesday, 22 September 2004. Sold For $22000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee. SICILY, Siculo-Punic. Circa 264-260 BC. AR 5 Shekels - Dekadrachm (37.54 gm). Time of the First Punic War. Head of Tanit left, wearing single pendant earring and wreath of grain ears / Pegasos flying right. Jenkins IV, Series 6, 440 (O2"/R9); SNG Copenhagen 180 (same obverse die); DeLuynes 3758 (same dies). Good VF/EF. Very rare. ($15,000)
Yours was made by antiquanova.com. Given the light weight, it's probably their copy made from tin rather than silver. They offer both. It looks like someone tried to make your "coin" appear aged. http://www.antiquanova.com/Siculopunic-Dekadrachm-Greece-270-260-BC-tin-replica-coin-d61.htm
The Antiquanova silver is 38.5g. and has their S mark between the rear feet of pegasus. I do not have one. I don't consider it one of their better replicas in terms of style but none are any good if you are familiar with the real ones.
Antiquanova makes lots and lots of replica coins for museumshops, souvenirshops and collectors, these are bound to make problems in the future amongst coin collectors. Some are obvious replicas / fakes, others are made better then the original ones imho. [/IMG] (marked with a geek sigma instead of the usual S) this decadrachme is nicely made, the Dolphins are high on the planchet and so is Arethusa's hair. Bought a lot of 30 mainly Antiquanova coins for $3 a piece for my black cabinet, wonder how many are already in coin collections without the owner knowing he has added fake coins.
