No deep, esoteric numismatic insights here. Just a funnier-than-usual Elymaean. Coins from the Arsacid dynasty of Elymais are often funny-looking, sporting bug-eyed portraits with misshapen heads. But this one, from a current auction, may take the cake thanks to a fortuitously positioned flaw. LOL’ed when I saw it. I’m not showing the run-of-the-mill reverse with its usual field of dashes. Not sure if the pit resulted from a flan flaw, chip, or ding (but I suspect there was a small metal particle on the die), but it was perfectly placed (and lit, in the auction house’s photo) to make me laugh. I hope it prompts a smile for you too.
I had a small collection; five or six Elmaies coins but sold as I do concentrate on Byz coins. One thing for certain, I learned a lot about the area, secondly. You might have nudged me into area. I have found they are a bargain and supply more than enough funny faces to enjoy. Thanks for the post.
