Hi, this is an odd topic I guess to post, but recently a friend of mine showed me this Elvis Coin, which is presumebly a 1/2lb. 24kt gold (solid?). The story goes it was a custom request to Washington Mint back in late '90s off of a design made to make silver proofs. We brought it to a jewelers shop where they had an X-ray machine to determine it was gold. But I am skeptical thinking plated is on the surface. How else could one determine the validity of it being near solid gold? I appreciate any response on this as I just want to help a friend.
There is no Washington Mint. I also don't think X-Rays can penetrate a thick gold, slilver, lead, etc. item such as that. A more definitive test would be to measure the specific gravity.
