Hi, I'm trying to attribute my Elizabeth I shilling. Weighs 6.03 grams, and has a diameter of 31 -32 mm. Does not have a rose or date. I'd be interested to hear your opinions on the year(s) of manufacture and issue, condition, & value. Thanks!
Thanks for the link. The coin in the link has ANG on the obverse, and my coin only has AN. Is that variation common?
Chronology is based in the types and initial marks. If you're curious about varieties, go to that website again and search the SCBC number.
Yes - appears to be Second Issue Shilling with Martlet mint mark. Number 2555 in the Spink catalague with Bust type 3C. Dating around 1560/1. Not sure on the AN instead of ANG variation - there do tend to be many varieties at this time.
Many thanks, Paddy. I need to get a copy of the Spink Standard Catalogue and learn more about British coins. What would you say the coin's grade/condition is?
Using International (as opposed to US) grading it would probably be vg or aF. Good points are the complete flan and legend, bad points are the wear on both sides. The portraits on Elizabeth I coins are invariably weak - the way the dies were made left them very prone to weak strikes and early wear. As such would expect to sell for around £80 to £100.
