I guess I will be showing my newness to collecting with this question...

I just completed the 71'-78 S proof set...but I am having a hard time telling the difference between say: A 1973S clad between the 1973S Silver Clad...

Are there specific markings I should be looking for? I know when you look at the coin from the side (is this the right term?) you can see the clad or solid silver...but when buying them most of the pics are straight...

    Thanks all...!

The main difference is in the clad layers. The clad Ikes have clad layers that are 75% copper and 25% nickel and core of copper (just like a clad dime, quarter or half). The 40% silver Ikes have clad layers that are 80% silver and a core that is about 21% silver. The copper core of the clad Ikes should be easy to spot on most coins.

  4. You can also weight them. The silver will weigh slightly more than the clad. TC
