Hi all, I'm wondering if there are any silver edge inscribed coins. I know there are British pound coins, Euros, and US president and Sacajeweas - all in clad or non-precious metals - but are there any in silver? Perhaps there are silver ones from different countries - does anyone know? Thanks in advance.
OK, I was able to find these HUGE silver 5 oz coins, America the Beautiful edition, which is made by the Philadelphia mint. Any others that are more "normal" sized? http://www.coinnews.net/2013/09/27/how-the-philadelphia-mint-makes-atb-5-oz-silver-coins/ Images from the 'net.
lol it looks like I'm just answering my own question but hopefully there are others like this. I found a silver coin from Finland from 1865-1870 with edge inscriptions: http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/finland-2-markkaa-km-71-1865-1870-cuid-19134-duid-60324
Pretty much every Swiss 5 Fr coin has an edge inscription (until 1969 they were silver), and all German 5 DM, 10 DM and €10 pieces have one. Many Dutch coins too. Note however that the Netherlands stopped issuing silver collector coins at face in 2008 (since then the silver versions have been surcharged), and Germany did so in 2011. Christian
Conder101 beat me to it. There are many different edge designs described in the Krause World Coin Catalogs. The edge designs include engrailed, reticulated, reeded, plain, lettered, security, beaded, etc. You could go through the catalogs page-by-page to locate hundreds of different coins with lettered edge designs. Here is a reticulated edge on a Russia 1861 15 Kopek: Edit to add: You can do a search at CT for "lettered edge" and you will find many previous threads discussing lettered edge coins. (like the 1873 Belgium 5 Franc I found doing the simple search). Note that the lettered edge is an anti-counterfeiting technique & it inhibits clipping. Therefore, it is an appropriate design for large denomination coins AND silver/PM coins.

Wow guys, thanks for the posts. There are A LOT more lettered edge / edge inscription coins than I first thought. I hope that they make more of it today at mints all around the world, as it's not only neat, I think it probably adds greater value (numismatic and security).
Except that the coins made for circulation today are not silver pieces. Every €2 coin, for example, has a lettered edge, and so do the British £1 and £2 coins ... Christian
