Right well...I have a new idea for a thread...

If you care...every new coin I get, i'm going to post a picture of it in this thread...maybe with a comment.

This week so far, I have filled 3 gaps...in a sense.

I don't really collect one type of coin and go for all the different years and mintmarks...but I try to get one of each type...

Today I got this 1942 half dollar...
    [IMG][IMG]

with a mercury dime...for less than $6. (feel free to grade them both)

I've been in a US coin phase now for a few months...and I've always wanted both of these...but could never find any in as good enough grades...or for a low enough cost.

I also got this Peace Dollar last saturday, another i've been after for ages...and in Fantastic condition...only $12.

I've now got at least one example of a Morgan, Peace, Ike (1776-1976), Susan B Anthony and Sacagawea dollars.

I'll be looking for a normal Ike now...pre-Morgan dollars are worth loads.

Also collect half dollar/quarters pretty much any US coin really.

Very nice. I have been collecting in a similar fashion. I just recently purchased my first 2 Mercury dimes. It's such a beautiful coin design. I place it right next to the Peace Dollar design as the designs I like most.

Keep posting. It's interesting to see what people are adding to their collections.

Today, I got the new state quarter...BU in P&D.

I'm sure it is much more fun collecting these from change, but if I was to do that...it would take me forever.

I actually did find my first ever State Quarter in change though (Iowa)...which is what opened my eyes to them..I had one, and wanted the rest.

    While i'm here....

You know the saying 'I coin is worth exactly what you will pay for it'

That's all well and good....but how much would the half dollar above be worth?

I could imagine someone would easily pay a couple hundred for it.
It looks like it has been dipped.

If the surfaces were original, it could go for $500+.

    Is it your's?
    How much did you pay?

I've been in a bidding war on ebay with it...My max bid being only $50 at the moment.

But now you say it might have been dipped?

So with it being dipped...still worth a few hundred $ you say?

He says it hasn't been polished/cleaned in the 20 years he's had it.

He seems a respectable coin dealer.

Well, the bidding war is a bad idea, unless you consider it fun and don't care how much you end up paying.
You'll usually wind up paying less if you snipe.

I notice the auction description emphasizes that the coin is original, uncleaned, and uncirculated.
If that's true, then it will most likely take a strong bid (probably $500+) to buy it.

The coin in the picture looks dull and washed out.
Pictures are often deceiving, so I could be wrong about the coin.

Have you asked the seller what his reserve is?

He sent me an email saying he grades it at MS61/62 and worth "$800" ...he says.

I think I might be out of my league ;)

I came into some cash recently...and thought I'd treat myself to a coin....$200 is my limit though.

He probably has his reserve set above $200, but if not, I'd wait until the last few seconds and place my maximum bid.
You never know. You might get lucky.
I wouldn't count on it though. There are probably several dealers and collectors watching that auction.

If not...I could spend $200 on loads of different coins then.

Like, a Barber half that isn't...so expensive.
    Upgrade my morgan maybe.

Yes, an unc. 1905 half is a pricey coin.
But come to think of it, most any high-grade Barber half is going to cost some real money.

Liked the design, thought i'd get one.
Not every coin has to be big and flashy :D
Nice filler coin for my album.

My way of collecting, I go for different types...not dates.

So that's my version of a set.

I've one of each example of a british £2 coin...so that is really my only complete 'set'

Glad you got it---I had gotten that coin along with alot others when I bought part of a hoard---I've sold and traded parts of it and still have some of the best pieces myself---this was an extra and I thought you might like it.
As for anything I'm looking for---nope---just enjoy it ;)

    Right well....today I got a presentation folder.

    The unification of germany commemorative.

It features a 1oz silver coin with the Berlin wall on it...unfortuantely the pack had been opened and the back of the coin has started to tarnish, so I have complete removed it and stuck it in an airtight.

Also a 1 Pfennig coin from the east, and one from the west.

And further still, an actual piece of the berlin wall, and barbed wire from the top.

Disapointed that I can't keep the coin in the original folder...but pleased none-the-less.

    I'll post pics later.

I also got that New zealand shilling, and in the envelope unbeknowns to me was a free gift...a 1939 Farthing.
