I went to the bank yesterday and got 31 Ikes and some bicentennial halfs. I have been seeing them every so often recently, do you think its the economy or am I just lucky? (or even both:kewl:)

    Any other stories like this?

It's probably a little of both. When I worked at the bank the economy was just starting to slow but hadn't gotten really bad yet and we saw people bring them in occasionally. One time, we had a guy bring in 95 of them in one deposit. So, you just timed it right...but I think people are more prone to cash in coins during these times that they might otherwise save.

Economy=Lowest mintages in years because so many people taking coins to the bank.

Economy=Why you don't see any 2009 coins in circulation except an occasional cent and quarter.

But I do think you probably were at the right bank at the right time, way to go!!!

I think it's a little luck and a lot of bad economy, because I've been seeing a lot of 40% silver halves and Ikes myself. People are cashing in hoards of coins to pay for gas and food, so there are many more in banks right now. But, I don't think the coins are going anywhere fast because lets face it, how many people besides us go into banks and ask for dollar coins and halves?

You also have to have a banking location that gives you a little support. Who knows, now may be a very good time to be a bank teller. Swapping out all those older silver coins with the clads. I always knew I should have went into banking.

I do believe though, most major banks would fire you for switching out their old silver coins for your newer non-silver coins. Even though it might be likely that the banks would jut assume give the coins back out in change to a customer. Could be wrong about my statement though, just drawing on my experience as a cashier in food places. We actually had a guy do that, and within a week or so we had a company meeting explaining that this was a form of theft even if the company received no additional profit either way.

You've got to be kidding me. You are doing an even exchange and its theft? Was the company going to post the silver coinage on ebay and bank the profit? I would have a real problem with a company doing this to an employee- big deal the emp. is a coin collecter so long as they are swapping for even exchange. Ive been a bank teller and picked up some nice coins and I told my head teller that I was a coin collector and the only thing she told me was to set aside the stuff I wanted in my drawer and at the end of shift I could exchange paper for coin. That was a nice way to pick up some pieces.

I always exchange stuff at the bank, 3-5 times a week. And I always ask tellers to save paper or coins for me. I dont see if they can do that for their customers, why the employees themselves can't take advantage of the same opportunities.

No, they don't care. I did it all the time. All you have to do is transfer the money to another teller and then buy it across the window like a normal customer. You can't just pull change out of your pocket and switch it...you have to go over the counter in a "transaction" but it is easy to do.
