Ebay thread...I don't want to create one, but I need opinions.

  1. I recently bought a coin in an auction. Seller doesn't offer returns and I understood that going in. Problem is, the seller sent a coin that was not the one pictured in the auction. But did make every attempt to make the 2x2 look like the on in the listing. The seller did not put in the listing that they use stock photos. But they also do not state that you will receive the coin in the picture listed.

I'm kind of curious how some would proceed.

But here's the kicker to the situation. The seller used a picture of a top one hundred VAM. Not a rare one and not one people who don't collect Morgans would pick up on. I'm guessing the seller uses this picture to get a few extra dollars.

I really don't care much about making a mistake bidding. I have done it before and will do it again. I should have asked if I would receive the coin in the picture. I just don't really like that the seller is baiting people.

Shoot him a message and see what he comes back with. Vegas Vic had a similar issue with an e-bay seller but in his case he contacted the guy ahead of time and asked if the coin pictured would be the one he was receiving. Assurances were made that it was, but when Vic received the coin it wasn't the one pictured.

These types of auctions are both misleading and dishonest unless the seller is forthcoming with a statement that he is using a stock photo.

I would contact the seller and say, "I didn't get the coin pictured in the auction. I'd prefer to get that specific coin, or my money back."

You shouldn't have to confirm that you'll get the item in the photos for the listing. Offering a return is completely separate from advertising one item for sale and then sending another (bait n switch.)

eBay will side with you pretty much 100% on this if you want your money back.

But I'd at least contact the seller first to see if it was an honest mistake before you have to make the decision to call eBay or leave a negative feedback.

That alone makes it look like deception. Stock photos are fairly common for large sellers, however, the photo is always the best example available.

Contact the seller first. If he will not take it back open a case with ebay.

Just playing devil's advocate...if I label all my 2x2's, and I like to be consistent because coin collecting is a healthy outlet for my personal amount of OCD...wouldn't they all look similar? Could you tell the difference between a 2x2 that was labeled with the intention to deceive from a 2x2 labeled with the intention of being consistent?

It doesn't have to be inferred that the seller was intentionally trying to be deceitful. Until the seller is contacted, that's not something we can assume just yet.

  8. No, there are no intentional marks to lead to this. It was unfair to me to say it that way. I just found it odd that the seller has two of the same date that they paid the same price for.

I'm sure you could still do an item not as described even if the seller states no returns.

I would also contact the seller first and give him a chance to correct the issue. If he does not correct it, then I would contact eBay for a return.

I really dislike deceptive sellers. IMO, if you're going to sell a "unique" item, meaning not an ASE out of a mint tube, then you should take the time to post a photo of the EXACT item you listed.

There are a couple large sellers that I like for bullion. APMEX is one of them. I have no problem buying ASE's from them with stock photos; however, when they list Morgans in MS64 and they have many of them (for exampl, listed a 4 available), I simply refuse to buy one. IMO, one MS64 is not like another and I want to know exactly what I'm buying. I've seen other sellers do this as well and I just pass on the listing.

  14. WOW!

    I sent this message:

    "Hi,

You sent a coin that was not the one pictured in the auction. I would like to receive the coin pictured in the auction and in the condition it is shown in or have my money refunded to me and send this coin back.

    Thanks"

I get the following three messages immediately one right after another:

"I'm not dealing with someone like you. Mail the coin back. Upon receipt I'll refund you."

"Also In all of my coin experience have never had someone say this. Thanks for being as a-----e."

"Return it then but I know
You received the coin pictured since I only own one of that coin."

At this point, since this seller is so irate, I am not sure if I send the coin, I will get my money back.

All for a $30 coin, I'm the rear-end; depression in the ground.

    1) Contact seller with issue and proceed from there.

    2) Do not support sellers who respect their clients so little as to specify no returns.

    3) Have some self-respect.

Now it is time to go through eBay. Open a case "significantly not as described" and follow as directed. I absolutely guarantee you will get your money back

I would send a different coin back and if he responds to it say it looked like the one you sent me. Just kidding I would send it back if he doesn't refund open case with ebay!

Well, with that response, now it is time to open the case with eBay. I'm not sure I would consider a negative feedback at this point (until the issue is resolved) but I would definitely consider noting the sellers use of profanity with their response in your feedback. Neutral is probable at this point.

I just don't comprehend how some sellers will act this way right off the bat. I only act like this (although I'd never call someone a name over a mistake) when someone is being a real winner.

At this point, just be business like. You paid for a certain item, the seller did not send that item, so you have a right to get your money back. Simple. No need to get into an argument or stress over it. Especially a $30 coin (but you do deserve that $30 back.)

Ebay is your friend in deals like this as long as you follow the rules.
No need to argue with the seller. Sounds like he is having a bad day.

What upset vegas Vic more then anything else is he knew after purchase but prior to shipping it was a stock photo but the guy made Vic waste his time going to the post office twice after flat out lying to vegas Vic about the coin. At least he never swore at Vic.
    (Tribute to bob dole)

Personally I'd say that when a salesman swears at me they get a neg. either on eBay or in real life. No one would accept me swearing on the job I see no reason that I would have to tolerate such behavior from someone I'm spending my hard earned money with.

I do agree that futher discussion with the seller is pointless. I just think you are being rather generous in your bad day assessment.
