http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....RK:MEWAX:IT&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc#ht_500wt_899 This 19th century brass token worth about £2.50 was bid up to this crazy sum thanks to the seller's misdescription of it as a genuine gold coin. I messaged the seller to inform him that it wasn't real, but he didn't alter the listing.
I have a fake somewhere around here. I agree that his looks like a regular $5 token but only he knows for certain, obviously the people bidding think it's real too. It's difficult to tell whether a coin is fake by looking at pics. jmho
He admitted to me in a private message that he had no clue, but would continue to sell it as genuine. Obviously a fake. Ignoring the colour of the metal or the crude portraiture, compare the style of the date to that of a genuine 1791 guinea (i.e. http://time-lines.co.uk/images/016729.jpg).
Wow, that sucks. What a crook, for not having a clue he surely represented it as being gold. Another crook on ebay, see folks even in the UK crooks exist, buyer beware. He even wrote below: :rollling: 100% GENUINE AND WORTH OVER £500 IN MINT CONDITION
Once there are bids you cannot alter the auction, only add to the description... or take it down, which is what he should have done. This is why I don't buy coins worth anything on ebay!
Absolutely. If Jerome told ebay at least they would have record of someone reporting that it was fake. That way if the new buyer wants a refund then there shouldn't be any question. "Once there are bids you cannot alter the auction, only add to the description... or take it down, which is what he should have done. This is why I don't buy coins worth anything on ebay!" Preston's Mom, As long as you buy coins under $15 or $20 you should be fine. All you gotta do is use common sense. If you do business with only sellers who have a 100% feedback or at least close to it, you should be fine. There are alot of trust worthy coin dealers on ebay.
I would have reported it to eBay, but there wasn't an option under the "report button" for inaccurate description or fraudulent items, and the coin was only going for £3.00 (reasonable for the item) so I assumed that no one would be ignorant enough to pay silly money for it. Could someone explain tome how to report someone for selling fake coins ?
It says Report Item right above the item number. It's across from the tab for Description. You have to pick an option, I forget if you get to use your own words or not.
If you are going to report auctions dealing with coins for fraud then you need to use this link. It allows you to write a description of the problem, and gets faster response. http://contact.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAP...3a46b6&rcode=c7d8e9c4b298eff616b2159d03a4ea35
