I returned this 1928 Peace dollar to the seller 2 weeks ago because it was a counterfeit (altered 1928-S). The coin did not show any of the known characteristics of the 3 known obverse dies and also under a loupe, had tooling marks where the S mintmark was removed. This finding was confirmed by a well respected local NGC coin dealer. The seller was informed of this and had granted me a refund (which I have yet to receive).
So... no refund yet and the seller has the nerve to relist the coin as genuine.

I see it has been reported to the CFE group. We'll see how long it lasts.

    I'll bite. CFE group?

So far as a refund goes, if you sent it with delivery confirmation and used PayPal, you will get a refund just by filing with PayPal.

Seller does not use Paypal but a "not as described" dispute has been opened with Ebay about 3 weeks ago. Seller had said a refund was "on the way" 10 days ago but it just ****ed me off when I noticed that she relisted the coin after getting it back. She can't play dumb and say that she didn't know it was altered because that is the reason for the return. These sellers help proliferate counterfeits by becoming an avenue to move them and she obviously does not care if they were real or not.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but ebay has had problems with the response and notification process on returns. I couldn't leave a response for 4 days last week. The seller had already refunded to my paypal, but couldn't get fees back from ebay until I responded. As she responded quickly , I felt bad, and emailed her the problem. Glad they got it straigtened out.

The CFE group is Coin Forgery Ebay. They chase this sort of thing. When one or two people report fraudulent listings ebay doesn't act too fast but when a whole bunch report it it goes away faster. Someone posted this listing on a thread there so we'll see how long it takes ebay to act.

After receiving an email notifying them that there was bad press going around about the coin in question they responded that they are confident that there is nothing wrong with the coin...then ended the auction early due to incorrect listing

Keep an eye out, it's bound to come back again later

BS. The coin was inspected by Redmond Rare Coins ( a certified NGC dealer) and Gene Henry, the biggest wholesale dealer in the Northwest and contributor to the Red Book. You think they'd know a counterfeit if they see one.

One of the CFe members sent a message to the seller and shortly afterwards the listing was ended. No reply from the seller, so we don't know if there was a cause and effect relationship or not, but she was put on notice that a large group of interested people were now on to her. Anyone interested in joining the CFe can message me at my eBay id, cksfp85. It's a closed group, so you have to be invited by a moderator.

    Hi cksfp85,
Can you give us any updates on the Savannah scammer? I know that they pop up with different ID's now and then. Just curious. Thanks.

Well, Pam, the doc's wife(or is it daughter?), was running a boatload of auctions with all sorts of fake collectibles and fake coin lots in the spring of this year.(Using the id "oldsavannahstuff") eBay allowed this to go on for several months, and she raked in over $4,000 in one month alone before the negs piled up and she was NARU'd. The foot dragging by eBAy in the face of the complaints of aggrieved buyers and onlookers was staggering. Haven't heard from that gang since, but there is someone with a Savannah address selling large numbers of fairly high quality fake columnarios (Pillar Dollars) who keeps popping up.

The money they've made and the amount of time they've been doing it and still no jail time? Amazing.

I believe that the doc himself was convicted in a Ga. court due to the dogged efforts of one of the people he defrauded who lived in the same state. It is very difficult to get a case started if the purchase was on the internet from another state, due to the vague laws. The private auction format makes it impossible to contact the "winners," so the scamming continues until enough defrauded buyers complain. Unless they paid using a credit card, good luck getting the money back. Because eBay makes it so easy for them, these scams continue to proliferate.

I can't understand why anyone would even bid on an unslabbed S-VDB... there are so many forgeries/counterfeit ones out there. You would think by now that buyers would know better than to buy any key date (of any denomination) that hasn't been graded by one of the top tier services. But, of course, they do... and every day dozens of unsuspecting buyers "win" these fakes. And, not knowing any better, the "coin" goes into their collection... to be sold again one day as genuine. Sad....

The faster and more people to report these listings the better. Here's why. Ebay's response to a bogus listing.

    Dear eBay Member,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to a suspicious coin listing.

Because eBay does not employ or train its Trust & Safety Customer
Support Representatives to be experts in the area of coins and currency,
we rely on expert opinions from knowledgeable people as well as reliable
third party organizations, such as the American Numismatic Association
    (ANA).

Your report will be reviewed by a group of members that comprise a
community watch group for coin auctions. They then confer amongst
themselves and either agree or disagree that the listings are
problematic. If it is agreed that a listing(s) is fraudulent or
improperly described, the listing(s) is then forwarded to eBay Trust and
    Safety for removal.

Please be sure to check our Prohibited, Questionable & Infringing Items
pages for information on eBay listing policies and guidelines:

    http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html

If you received an informational alert or warning, and you have
additional questions, or you have another listing to report, please
contact us at the following link:

    http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html

In order for us to get to you in a timely manner, please do not respond
to this email. If you reply to this message we will not receive your
email. All communications should be sent to the link provided above.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping
eBay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,
    eBay Customer Support

Hmmm. No wonder the guy I got kicked off for harassing me 3 weeks after the sale for leaving a neutral feedback, is back on ebay. He got slapped on the hand for a month and is now released back to the community.

If these guys are allowed to operate, no wonder this guy is back. Ebay is just as criminal as the sellers they cater to.
