Meaning coins not overinflated for what they are actually worth.

Or the fakes, I hate ebay allowing Chinese/US fakes.

It is the seller that rips you off.. I have acquired plenty of decent coins off Ebay

True, it is. I guess I just have to get better at knowing what to look for. Any good thread that details this?

There is a sell and trade options in the forum section! Of course you can buy what is being offered for sale! Also if you are looking for a certain item you can post a "wanted" thread!

I like buying here and on eBay. EBay has a lot of variety. I think I have also bought on USA Coinbook. Ebay has pretty good buyer protections, I have been careful and / or lucky, but I know if I'm dissatisfied I can return and get my money back. On eBay I'm careful to buy from US sellers with high feedback who deal in coins, and I look carefully at the reviews for fake looking reviews or notes that are of concern. I don't typically buy more expensive coins raw either, I like to see them in an ANACS, ICG, PCGS or NGC slab (I'm a budget collector anyway). I also try and take note if I see someone reputable here who has a bad experience or good experience with a particular eBay seller.

Great Collections, David Lawrence, Heritage, Stacks

Most other places you'll have the same issues as eBay (which is fine) but there's also FB, IG, Reddit

EBay didn’t rip you off. Individual sellers on EBay ripped you off.

I agree with John65999 on Coinbook. Don't let yourself get ripped off (unless you are hopelessly in love with a certain coin). Buying slabbed coins is the only way I'll buy anything (without being able to actually hold it and buy from someone I trust). Check price guides, auction results (learned that right here on CT), avg Ebay prices, etc. Everyone is out to make as much $$ as they can. Cheers!

Apmex and JMBullion are very reputable to buy from.

Well, actually eBay ripped me off (or, to be more accurate, ripped off one of my buyers). For the first time I used the Global Shipping program, and it charged my buyer $27.05 for "customs and other fees." The problem is that Norway does not charge customs fees on numismatic imports. I went round and round with eBay to get a refund for my buyer, as before shipping with this program I called eBay and they assured me to just "go ahead and ship, we will refund the customs fees."

Turns out that was incorrect advice from their customer service center. They apologized, but said no refund would be issued. I had already passed on the info to the buyer that these fees would be refunded. So my reputation with him was tarnished.

To make it right, I offered him to refund the fees myself, even though I will be out the entire amount.

So, no, Virginia, there is no Santa Claus at eBay Global Shipping.

The mistake honestly was to get in the middle of that. "customs and other fees" isn't just customs. Is it expensive to the GS as a buyer yes, but many sellers switched to that to protect themselves. Most countries have a way for people to get unwarranted customs fees back, but while your heart was in the right place trying to be helpful you kinda fell on a sword for something you had no control over. The only thing you could have done would have been to ship it yourself and get put at risk for charge backs with how slow international shipping is now.

Really anything with taxes, customs, or eBay global shipping you just have to say you have no control over it. You can offer suggestions for where they could try and get them reversed but you'll never be able to do it as a seller

You're right, of course. But I've shipped to Norway countless times over the past fifty years and NEVER had one single issue. Yes, I should have shipped it myself this time, too. And I will in the future and take the risk. But $27.05, even as a "middle man," to preserve MY word (even though I was acting in good faith and the promise of an eBay customer service representative) is a small price to pay to ease my own conscience.

Honestly I wouldnt in todays climate. I basically left eBay at this point. For many years sent numerous things to Australia whether a sale or to a friend until last year when something from eBay took about 4 months to get there and they tried numerous charge backs through no fault of my own and it was a hassle when it ended up showing up. Shipments are up, cargo space on planes is down, customs is slower, delivery is slower etc, all you can really do is explain that fact and everything else is out of your control.

The big problem with taking the risk of doing it yourself is no matter how well meaning you are or how upfront, if it gets held up long enough they can do an item not received and end up getting it for free when you did nothing wrong

I’ve never sold anything on EBay to customers abroad. I may actually try Global Shipping though. It would be nice to be able to avoid the hassle and liability.

Ebay has a very good return policy. I have never been let down when questioning seller items and returns. There are several reputable sites to choose from. It's your choice which of those you may prefer. Good luck.

@Howard Ryan, just so you know, giving us details of your complaint might be a useful learning experience for others here. "Ebay blows" doesn't exactly tell us the problem.
