So, I dont use Ebay much. I bid on a coin and got it. Poor photo, crummy description (listed as Severus Alexander Jupiter, clearly a Julia Maesa Vesta in the photo). Anyway, I bid because I thought it looked like a scarce As. What I got was a crummy limes denarius. I have no need or want of it, cant resell it for what I paid. The auction listing says " NO REFUNDS ", but he also has in his settings 14 day money back I pay the shipping. What does everyone say about this? Am I bad for trying to return it? Its a well known 'dealer' (well, at least on Ebay anyway). Strangely the item does not show up in my purchase history on Ebay. Everything else does, but not this one. It wasnt a private listing or anything. Makes me wonder what the heck is going on with Ebay these days!
Return it. I've returned items to sellers that supposedly didn't take returns. One I asked politely and he said sure, no problem. The other I asked politely and he declined. That's when I told him I'd issue a complaint with eBay and Paypal and his local police department. What he sold me was a scam through and through. He immediately refunded my money.
Can you post the picture they posted? If it was not listed inaccurately, all you can do is ask for a return. Do NOT do item not as described just because you decided it wasn't as nice as you hoped, etc. That hurts the seller. And yes, you should pay for the return.
Just return it, he cannot not accept. You don't need to give a reason, but giving a legit reason relieve you from the responsibility of return shipping cost. Paypal will refund you no question asked. You should definitely refuse paying for return shipping cost. Unless it's your own mistake drunk ebay buying the wrong stuff or w/e.
I dont have the photos (but as a dealer of nearly 30 years trust me, it was not Severus Alexander but Julia Maesa!). I had thought it may be a different denomination. It was not. Description was not accurate in any way. So, within minutes of requesting he accepted the return. I guess I will return it tomorrow. Although I didnt expect any hassles I wanted to open a discussion and see what issues others may have had.
The way I took it, he bid THINKING it was one thing, but it wasn't. So he took a gamble. Gambles mean sometimes you lose. Ask for a refund, but you should pay return shipping in my opinion. If the pics were not very clear, you should not have taken a gamble.
Ebay now has that step before you open a case with them that essentially allows buyers and sellers to work it out. You can request a return etc even for items that say no return. But in this case you're completely covered just select wrong item received. Just put in the notes that the item received doesn't match the item pictured which is what you thought you were purchasing. Also the purchase should show up under your purchase history if you go to the main tab for it through my Ebay and scroll all the way down. I agree with @brassnautilus that you shouldn't have to foot the bill for return shipping if this is on the seller.
As I mentioned, I've been a dealer for many years. In by own business dealings I always pay for return postage if someone is unhappy (perhaps one in 5,000 sales). Its just good business, but I understand that some dont see it that way.
Simple answer: return it. I ahve in the past on items listed just so with no problems. One guy balked, but decided to refund anyway.
It is a little hard for me to determine who was at fault. If I made any kind of error, or the buyer disagrees with anything I've said, I offer to pay, but if they just change their mind, they pay.
The seller is one phone call away from getting ebay to pay for the shipping costs both ways. There is a seller protection program that act sorta the same way as buyer protection. It doesn't cover the seller 100%, but ebay doesn't care about waving shipping costs.
