That's the most tabloid-worthy title I've seen here in a while. What they're actually doing is increasing the ceiling on Final Value Fees from the current $250 to $750 -- for sellers who don't have an eBay Store. Now, a one-month subscription to eBay Store costs $20. If you have a Store, your FVF on coins drops from 10% to 6%. That means that if you sell more than $500 worth of stuff in a month, you'll save money by buying a Store membership for that month. If you're doing this month after month, you can subscribe for a year at $16 a month -- that brings the monthly break-even threshold down to $400. So, suppose you're going to sell an item for $3000. Under this new change, if you don't have a Store, you'll pay $300 in FVF, instead of $250. OMG 20% INCREASE!! But if you do have a store -- or if, knowing you're going to sell a valuable item, you go ahead and buy a one-month membership -- you'll pay $180 in FVF, saving yourself $100 after the membership charge. Even if eBay hadn't made this change, you'd still be coming out $30 ahead with the membership. This change will affect only people who are selling high-value (>$2500) items and don't have an eBay Store. I think that's a really tiny fraction of eBay's seller community. If you are affected, the remedy is simple -- buy an eBay Store membership. You'll save money even compared to eBay's current fee structure. Compared to other eBay policy changes over the years, this is one of the least offensive ones I can remember.
Yeah, I usually neglect insertion fees, since it seems like they give away so many free insertions per month now. If you're listing enough items that you run out of free listings, that's yet another argument in favor of opening a store.
Does the ebay store thing come with 50 free no insertion fee Buy it Now listings? If you have 50 items that you list every month fixed price, with no store, it's $15 fee, and 10% FVF, right? If you pay the monthly store fee $19.95, you get $15 in free listings, meaning you pay less than $5 for a 4% FVF reduction?
Buy it now fixed priced listings? If you get 250 of those, that's $75 alone savings in insertion fees. Are you sure it's not auction style?
You get 150 fee-free insertion fees (auction or BIN) with the basic store. Plus they offer more insertion fee free listings throughout the month (currently I have a 5 day offer for BIN, up to 10,000 listings).
My quick calculations tell me you need to sell about $3,000 each year to break even. $3,000 in sales no store - $300 FVF + about $100 insertion fees = $400 $3,000 in sales with store - $200 store fee + $180 FVF = $380
What they are doing works for them. This is not a charitable organization they are a for profit business. Let's see how business has been going They are making a gross income of over $10billion a year, and they almost doubled their income in 4 years. If their product they were selling was as bad as so many sellers claim I see no way a company could do this well selling a defective product. Further, the number of pcgs and ngc us coins is up around 50% from when I first started using eBay. Today 150,390 at the time of this post. Show me another coin store where they have offer over a thousand certified ms and proof 60 and up Indian head cents. People love to bash eBay but they are the clear market leader. And with their great customer service experience that I have personally encountered there is an obvious reason that a great number of people use eBay for coin transactions. Their profits are up and there are more us coin lots for sale now then they have ever had. People can complain and predict eBay doom but the numbers I see (remember people lie numbers don't) just show a successful company selling a successful product that more and more people are happy to use despite cost increases.
