Hi everyone. I need some advise on what to do about a recent ebay purchase. So, there was an auction for a complete Lincoln set 1909-2018 with all the keys undamaged. 09-svdb 14d 22 plain,31 s all in a new dansco folder. the starting price 15 days ago was $900 The thing is, I bid $901 on it back then and nobody else has bid or watched the set. How could this be? the key's alone are worth around 2 grand. The seller doesn't accept returns. Like the old saying goes-if it seems too good to be true,it probably is. I have the money. That's no problem. But every time I start to complete the transaction, something inside say's no. I'm a long time ebay member with over 900 positive feedbacks. I just don't know.

If nobody else bid on it for 15 days I'd be very cautious and wondering why. Did you thoroughly check out the seller. Feedback, Google the name, etc. As for the seller not accepting returns ebay has their own rules re returns which are favorable to the buyer. I don't remember what PayPal's policy is but at one time the payment wasn't released until the buyer received the coins. If you request a return and the seller is not legit, your money will be long gone before you request a return.
    Caveat emptor.

Any established seller on eBay I think is a fairly safe bet you'll get the stuff or a refund. Now the reason it sold for little compared to retail. Most coins that aren't beauties, well photographed, appealing or very well promoted can sell for much less under retail if at all. Realize too the supply competing and that the overall economy is still crap is the reason why most coin lots don't get bid up or at all as they deserve. Don't be afraid to complete the purchase. Look over all the coins. If the coins look like cleaned, altered surface, artificially toned or beat up garbage you could make a complaint and eBay can force a return if they're not accurately described condition wise. I don't like this process myself much as complaints are all subjective on certain items and bears a financial burden on sellers but if what's sold is crap it deserves review.

I don't understand. You won an auction? Then how was it a 15 day auction? The max they allow is 10 days using auction format. Or are you saying you put in an offer of $901 and the seller accepted? Please help me understand.

Can you pay with PP? If yes, then you should be covered.

I'm not sure that $900 is all that low of a price. The grades of the key dates is important to know.

All of the key's are slabbed 09vdb is f-12 22 is g-8 14-d is vf-20 all pcgs. It was an auction like I explained. 10 day. Sorry I said 15. Senior moment. LOL I'm not new to coin collecting. I started seriously in 1981 after going through my young times. Met my wife, settled down and got back into collecting. I have seen svdb"s pcgs VG- 10 go for $600 alone recently on ebay. All of the coins are problem free. Think I'm gonna go for it and take my chances. As you say, PP will protect me.

The way you describe it I think you're getting a nice deal. Good luck. Hope it turns out well for you.

Don't think you have anything to worry about. If you don't get what's described you can return it regardless of whether they accept returns or not and if you get what was described you're saying it's a bargain so no worries IMO

If you want to see what very well may be the real problem here, you might want to take a look in the mirror.

No one forced you to chase after what you want to believe is a “deal”, sir. Deals are great when it works out, but potential “deals” are usually this way for a reason. If you’re not willing to shoulder risk for a potential reward, then chasing after them simply isn’t for you. If there’s even a chance you’ll be unwilling or even hesitant to follow through on your end, don’t bid.

When we play in the mud, we’ve only one person to blame when we get dirty.

I have paid the man. Must be nice for you to never have taken a risk. I reached out to the seller and shared my concerns with him. He said not to worry and if I don't like the set, to send it back at my cost. Seems fair.

Since all of the keys are slabbed, I think you got a good deal. It takes the worry of counterfeits off the table.

If I bid on something, I pay for it ASAP. Any questions are ask before I bid.

That’s not what I said, is it? This is very simple: if you want to chase deals you also have to be willing to shoulder risk. If unwilling to shoulder said risk or willing to back out of agreements after the fact, there are plenty of other options to safely acquire the coins you want. You’re just going to pay for the privilege.

Additionally, this experience should also serve as an example as to why it’s smarter to first reach out to the other party than it is to speculate on a coin forum.

The Lincoln set came and was sent back today. The slabbed coins shown on the ebay site were not the same as I received. Problems on all as stated on the labels. Raw coins were either cleaned or had damage, however small. I should have trusted my instincts. Thank goodness for PayPals return policy.
