Recently made my first purchase on Ebay using pay pal. It seemed to work pretty well. I have noticed some post about problems that some have had with both of these in particular pay pal. My question is before I press my luck, what should i watch out for in regards to using pay pal in particular. Does it work reasonably well. Also the feedbacks from buyers on Ebay. I do not think I have seen any sellers with less than a 99 feed back score. Something about that does not seem right to me. Does Ebay edit these feedback responses. ..... Help and thanks.

I've never had an issue with paypal. It's some of the sellers on ebay that you need to watch out for.

    Attention Sellers:

Are you confident the coin or paper money you are listing is authentic? Are you aware it is against eBay policy to sell fraudulent currency?
eBay reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to remove any coin, paper money, or any numismatic-related item listed if eBay believes the listing is inconsistent with the selling guidelines set by the American Numismatic Association, or inconsistent with eBay’s goals of promoting the hobby and maintaining a safe trading environment.

eBay strongly recommends that sellers include all relevant information known about the coin or paper money, including any alterations the seller believes may have been made to the item, and include a clear scanned image of the actual item.

Please help us make eBay an even safer place to trade.

This is the warning I received before listing proof sets for sale. Am I that abd of a person and the others that good? lol

Pay attention to feedback. www.toolhaus.org will help you wash thru alot of the false positives. Buy the coin and not the holder. If you do buy a holder, make sure it is the names we can trust. Research the values by lookign at old auctions. And if doubt, post the link here and let the others help you out. Most importantly, dont pay more than you want to because of a bidding frenzy.

I have had only 1 problem and what I learned was that if I am going to pay for something using paypal to use a credit card. Well unless it is an in-expensive item or a dealer I already trust. The reason being that you know have two places to file disputes. You can always stop payment using the credit card. I also use http://www.toolhaus.org/ for checking feedback - and of course found on this wonderful board. The problem with feedback is that so many people get hyper over it - gotta have that positive. I proubly just got my first negative - guy sold me a bum coin using what I think is an altered picture(found after paypal ruled against me). Of course as a buyer I could careless about the negative - just be careful on ebay. I do not think ebay edits feedback, but they really do want people only leaving positives. I recommend using heritage and respected dealers (my favorite is harlan berk) to determine what you would pay on ebay - do not get caught up in bidding wars, be patient and I think you will eventually get the coin you want at a reasonable price. I am sure others have had worse experiences, but I really have not had anything "really" bad happen.

thanks for the information. I guess i was really curious about Pay pal more than ebay. I know you have to be careful on Ebay and still you can have problems. If i did have a problem, I did not want to feel like i was getting double teamed by both ebay and pay pal

My knowledge is not keen enuff, not to mention my eye sight to pick out these tokens that i have learned through here are often sold as big time coins. I would only buy coins through the us mint, certified from Pcgs or NGC and a few dealers that i have purchased from, outside of ebay

Raw coin through ebay I am not sure I will ever be ready for that.

I have made a few hundred purchases through Paypal via credit card and have never had a problem. Do watch for any strange emails you might receive from something looking like Paypal , but they are not , just another scum-bag looking to rip into your identification.

I have received a few of these too. Just go to the website via a Google search NOT using any link the email may provide. Contact them and ask if they sent it. Normally I forward them to Paypal and always get an immediate reply from their security team that is is a phishing email scam.

I received an email the other day saying I had won an WPT contest and they needed my personal info and SSN (BIG RED FLAG) to payout the prize. Never do this unless there is some way you can confirm the source. This one turned out to be real :thumb: and my prize is on the way :high5:.

Always error on the side of caution...

My son has been buing and selling on ebay for many, many years and all through paypal. He has never ahd a problem yet. I don't know how to use paypal so the only purchase I made from ebay was with a personal check and that turned out to be a disaster. As noted paypal is OK it's the sellers that may be a little on the shaddy side.

PayPal basically sucks but it's what everyone uses.

Here's essentially how PayPal works. If the seller has a business account, he only needs to do two things to avoid getting charge back. He has to ship (with a trackable service) to the "confirmed address" and he has to ship in a timely manner (within 7 days). There may be some other requirements, but they're pretty much inconsequential.

That basically means that the seller can ship you a box of dog crap to your confirmed address and PayPal will rule against you in the dispute (I mean that quite literally).

The thing that may throw a monkey wrench in is that you can purchase insurance. I'm not exactly sure how the insurance works, but I believe that is what will protect you against getting the box of dog doo.

On the flip side, as a seller, that means that if you ship the item to any address besides the confirmed address, the seller can dispute it and you lose, no ifs ands or buts. Same goes for not having tracking info or shipping too late.

Now one thing to check into is eBay insurance. Last I recall, eBay had a $200 insurance policy on all policies. That meant that if you bought something and got shafted, they would cover you up to $200 (with a $25 deductible). I believe you had to jump through some hoops to get it, but if someone shafted you on a coin, it might be worthwhile looking into. Also, I know some transactions now offer PayPal insurance...if you look at a listing and it says you are covered up to $2k or something, that's supposed to be some sort of insurance.

One thing you need to realize about insurance on a package - it's the seller/shipper that gets paid the insurance money. It is up to him/her to pay you the addressee.

One good thing about living in a small town and getting USPS you know everyone. When i bought my first few coins from a dealer I opened them in from of the post mistress as i call her just becouse of what I may have been shipped. A witness so to speak

A friend of mine ordered a camera and off ebay and when they opened the box it was a box of dirt. They had a heck of a time getting this and posted so much stuff about them on the feedback thing that they finally sent them another camera. That is some of the stuff that does scare me.

I am expecting a small shipment of 2006w silver eagles from the mint and when i get these i will take a break from waiting on anything. I have been expecting something since the AGE were realesed last year. Give me a break...

thanks so much for all the good information on here. It is such a shame that one can not make an honest business tranaction without at least having the thought that you are going to get ripped off in the back of your mind.

    Congrats!!! Very Cool...

As far as PayPal/Ebay I am pretty picky about who I do business with or there is little cost/risk involved. It's like the grading by some of the TPG's. Reduce the grade by a couple points and you are closer to the true grade. Set your expectations a little lower than the description and generally you will be happy with the result. I would be pretty upset about a box of dirt. Those are the guys you would just love to run into somewhere discrete.
