I've had some recent problems with identity theft and would rather not have a Paypal account. Do most sellers on eBay take credit cards?
There have been times when I have paid for an item on ebay using a credit card, but only through paypal.......
PayPal charges your CC. You still have the protections that PayPal and your CC company offers. Sort of like double coverage. That's how I do it, and find that I have no security problems.
Nope. Most sellers will not take credit cards because they are vulnerable to chargebacks by fraudulent buyers. Paypal provides sellers a layer of protection when buyers want to use credit cards.
I found this on eBay: "You can pay for items with a credit or debit card as long as the seller accepts them. Before you bid or buy, check the listing to see which payment methods are accepted. "The payment will be processed through PayPal, but you don’t have to sign up for a PayPal account."
I'm not sure why you would feel safer directly exposing your CC information than having PayPal act as an extra security layer. Even if all CC transactions are still processed by PayPal regardless of having an account, I'm not sure what would make that more appealing. If you literally don't want to have a PayPal account because it's an "extra liability", you should seek advice on how to properly enable added security features because PayPal IS a safe option. You're not going to find many sellers who accept anything besides PayPal.
I use Paypal credit and it's not tied to anything. They keep sending me email links to complete my Paypal setup, but I can't complete the setup without tying Paypal to a checking account-unless I'm missing something. Well I'm not setting up a checking account for Paypal so as long as they keep accepting my orders, I'll use Ebay. If/when they won't, I'll go somewhere else.
I have never had a problem using Paypal (buying or selling). But, I am extremely guarded with my info. My own family doesn't know my Paypal info. I don't feel safe to use my CC's for online buying. Do you have an idea how your info got into the wrong hand?
Some (including me) will still happily take a postal money order. No fees, no worries of chargebacks, etc. I prefer them actually.
I'm not giving some fly-by-night Ebay seller a CC number. That's what Paypal is for. To my mind, OP, you've got it backwards and Paypal is safer than using a CC itself.
Well, I already have the credit card, and I need that for all kinds of things. The problem with Paypal is that they have my bank account number, and I envision someone emptying out my bank account. One poster suggested I keep that particular account as low as possible, so I guess I could create a bank account just for Paypal.
It appears to me that Paypal handles the credit card transactions, so that only Paypal would see my credit card number.
PayPal has only my CC#, no other banking info at all. It works well for me. When I have to make a payment, PP charges my CC and sends the cash to the seller, who gets nothing but the cash. If I have a positive balance in my PP account and want the money, I get a credit to my CC. On my CC I can carry a negative balance or CC will send me a check.
The number of online merchants who accept Paypal directly is already enormous and growing daily. Me, I've been with Paypal since the year they appeared (1999), and link a dedicated bank account to it. I churn as much of my own spending as possible through it, and have for a long time. No way, by this point, that I cannot win a dispute with a seller (assuming I'm right). And it's one single point of failure for that credit card information, if that's the way you wish to go. To my mind, the fact that Paypal has yet to be hacked - considering how fat a target they are - speaks volumes about their security.
That's what I did. I keep the account balance very low. I can instantly transfer money from another account to the account used for paypal, but the account is not directly linked to my other accounts so if someone gets ahold of the PP linked account they can't access my other accounts.
