http://cgi.ebay.com/1945-Jefferson-Penny-US-coin-/170584002657?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27b7995061 Ebay is a source of entertainment to me now.
I like these, mentioned it already in the past. Picked up today a Shield nickel i got on eBay for $5.40, including international shipping. I consider it a rather low overall price. Seller listed it as 1868 Shield Nickel, but there are rays with stars around the 5, so it must have been a 1866, seller just failed to see the difference and the correct year (which is quite visible). It seems to be in VG, maybe even close to F, and if it was a 1868, it should have been around $19. Since its 1866, the value should be in the $40 area. Sellers fail is often buyers success.
Craigslist is funny too when you look at the prices. Everyone thinks their junk is worth hundreds. The worst I saw last night was someone listing 397 1989 baseball cards - not rookies or anything special, just cards - and asking $195 for it. Those cards are maybe worth a buck total. Everything listed under collectibles is like that.
Don't get me started on baseball cards. It took me forever to complete a 1989 upper deck set. When I did, the most it was worth was $110--a hundred bucks for the Ken Griffey Jr. card, and ten bucks for all the rest. I don't know what it's worth now.
In the early days of ebay, we used to type in words at random to find items that were misspelled. Our best scoop was a "Rear Lynch Box- Mint" listed under gardening items. What it actually was, was a "Rare Lunch Box- Mint". That's all the title was. We bought it- a mint condition Roy Rogers Lunch Box and Thermos for $9.99. After receiving it we reposted it correctly and it sold for $700.
Someone sent me a real story of ebay schadenfreude last week: http://gizmodo.com/5713664/this-great-ebay-scam-will-warm-your-heart
Well, here's #3! I was looking for something to spend my ebay bucks on and ran across this "lol" moment. http://cgi.ebay.com/1924-S-Buffalo-...61?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item41535e6661 At first he thought it was 'VF" and worth $290.00. But then he must have looked it over one more time and thought, "naaahh, maybe it's a fine". Slash that price out! Lets ask for ONLY $80.00 for it. (A low range fine price.) Then I come along and say, "Yeah, I think you still missed it by a FEW grades! Better slash that second one out too and put an AG under it and drop the price to $10. Then it still may or may not sell." lol
