I purchased a 1964 Thru 1977 BU & Proof JFK Half Dollar Set from a seller on Ebay. Link to ended auction below.

1964 Thru 1977 BU & Proof JFK Half Dollar Set

I thought I would be getting every JFK half dollar from 1964-1977 including the SMS coins in BU condition.

After my check recently cleared I decided to take another look at the pictures in the auction. After doing so I noticed that the picture was showing every coin I will be receiving. Previous to this second look I thought a page of JFK dollars was not pictured.

The Dansco album has 35 coins from 1964-1977. I am getting 29 of those. Anybody know what will be missing? Or why the Whitman coin album only has places for 29 coins and the Dansco has 35?

I am confused because I thought 2 of the coins that would be missing would be the 1976 40% silver BU and Proof but those appear to be in the picture. I guess I can forget about the 1965-1967 SMS coins in BU and the 1970 D in BU.

The Whitman Folder states, "Uncirculated - Proof ONLY issues". I imagine that does NOT include P and D mint issues that were non-proof coins. It looks like this album contains most of the "S" mint proofs along with 1964.

The seller's main item description does state BU and Proof, but the folder does not, nor shows it.

Nate, You've just had another reminder to "buy [and read] the book before the coin." :(

I did buy a Dansco album for the JFK half dollars. I thought it would be an easy transfer from this Whitman album and would fill every coin slot form 1964-1977 in my Dansco. Does Whitman do this all the time in their albums (leave out key dates)?

Does anybody have an opinion about the selller being vague in the description and misleading? I used to collect baseball cards and I feel this auction would be simaler to somebody selling a set of baseball cards having removed some key players.

I am going to email the seller now and see what they think.

Different people have different opinions about what makes up a set. Some include proofs, others don't. Some call a date set a "complete set" others have to have each mint mark. Same thing with type sets. Its not safe to assume that if someone is selling a "completed" set, that it is complete to your liking alone.

    Lesson learned...

Well, things worked out very well for me. The seller has agreed to give me a full refund. They hadn't shipped out yet, thank God.

I have relearned a very important lesson about assumptions. Do not make assumptions. I had the ability to ask a question and I chose not to. That was a big mistake and could have ended up costing me.

I am going to be more careful from now on and ask a lot of questions.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Have a good day!

    Nathan,

A very valuable lesson indeed. Each manufacturer of the albums we use in our hobby are different. Some even make several versions of each issue. Most collectors are easily satisfied with the standard issues and do not wish to have empty holes for key dates or varieties.

I want to have all of the coins in my JFK half dollar set (eventually).
I am new to serious collecting but I prefer the Dansco albums. The Dansco I bought for my have dollars appears to have a place for every JFK half dollar regardless of how rare it is.

It reminds me of the baseball cards I used to collect. I have several sets that are like 500 cards plus and I'm only missing 2 or 3 of the players in those sets. However those are the best cards!

It is easier to collect if you only collect the more common coins. I find it more rewarding to go for the key dates in a set. That's just me though.

    Thanks for the information.

Buy the 98-S matte finish (SMS) coin first. But I don't think I'd put it in a Dansco album, or any album for that matter. The matte finish will surely show slide marks if you put it in an album.

The Dansco album doesn't have a place for that coin (1998 S matte). I thought the 1995 S siliver proof was the most expensive coin in the set. I was wrong though.

I'd like to get the JFK/RFK set someday.

I'm picking up $100 worth of Kennedy halves tomorrow at the bank. I hope I find something good. Odds are I won't find anything from 1964-1970. However, I did get a 1967 JFK at the bank just last month. I love paying face value for coins! :D

You were lucky...but then again, not all sellers are crooks as many are on the up and up. Keep that seller on the "buy" list.

    Me too!

I went to the bank a couple of months ago and asked for $20 in pennies, but they could only give me $10 worth so I asked for a roll of halves too. I went home and the pennies were average, but out of 20 halves 6 were 64's and 5 were 66-69!! I was thrilled so I went back to the bank and asked how many more halves that they had and they told me $210 more. So I took them all. When I sorted them I found (out of 420 coins) 42 more 64's (mostly d's but a few p's) and 37 more 66-69's!!! What amazing luck, I don't even collect halves, so I called my dad (since he does collect them) and he paid me a fair "finder's fee" for the whole bunch. I was sitting at my table the whole time I was looking through them thinking, "This is as good a Christmas!"
