This is for Pennycase. I was currious how you might handle this situation. I purchased a 1921 morgan. The seller has good feedback. In the description it stated it was a BU coin. He stated he seels quality coins. When I got the coin, it had been cleaned. Never stated this in the description, and the picture looked good. No shine in the pic. Does he deserve negative feedback, even though he has a return policy?

My reason for wanting to leave negative feedback is:
    1. He is a large coin dealer.
    2. Stated the coin you see is the coin you get.
    3. Made no referance to the cleaning in the coin, and is well aware of it.

This is the 3rd cleaned morgan I have bought from a large dealer on ebay. Dont get me wrong, I love Ebay.

I'm not Pennycase, but if I may answer too.

Have you contacted the seller and discussed the coin being cleaned? Have you asked for a refund?

He did state that the coin you see, is the coin you get. Granted, as seen in ND's post about cleaned coins, I can't tell a cleaned coin from a picture.

Should the dealer have said it was cleaned, Yes. Is he offering a return policy , Yes.
Does he deserve negative feedback before an attempt at getting your money back is made, NO.

Negative feedback should only be left if attempts to correct the problem have failed.

    Just my opinion.

I have to agree with collect4fun on this. If the person made a mistake, or if there's a difference of opinion and they make good on it, negative feedback would not be warranted.

I should have added - perhaps you should withhold feedback completely. I certainly would not post until the transaction was completed to my satisfaction.

By the way, it's my policy when I'm the seller to post feedback as soon as acceptable payment has been received. I do not wait for the purchaser to post feedback for me first.

I would give the seller the benefit of the doubt first. If this person chooses not to make the deal right, then leave the negative feedback. It could very well be an honest mistake.

    Good points.
I have not posted negative feedback.

I did send a email to the seller.

He does have a return policy.

My problem here is, if I was a noob, I would not care. He has a couple thousand feedbacks, mostly coins. He knows a cleaned coin from one that is not. Is he praying on the noobs?

Just because someone sells coins does not mean that they can spot cleaning or any other problem. Selling coins doesn't require knowledge.

I think some big sellers do not even look at the coin, they have a flunky scannig them and posting them and their return policy protects them

    Chris,
I agree that a negative feedback is not yet warranted. If the seller does not make good on this transaction, then I would neg him but not before. He may have known the coin was cleaned or he may not have. Does this seller provide an in-depth text description with his pictures? Many do not and therefore are not necessarily looking closely at the coin. I do not agree with this, but I can see how it could happen that the seller would list a cleaned coin and not have noticed because they're not closely examining each coin. If he has had over 1000 successful transactions and has a return policy, I would tend to think that you will not have a problem returning the coin. Not to make excuses for the seller, but when you sell a high volume of raw coins, mistakes will be made. It is easy for a cleaned coin (especially if it is only lightly cleaned) to slip through.

They did not respond to my email. I have chose to just sell it along with a couple other bad apples I have gotten over the last few months. But, I stated it was cleaned.

I just looked through this sellers other items, and he clearly states that some of his coins have been cleaned. This tells me that he at least has a basic understanding of how to spot a cleaned coin. Several others also appear to be cleaned without the admission. Kind of hard to tell with the lighting used. If you compare several photos, it seems as if his lighting technique is useful in hiding possible problem coins.
I would worry about this guy.

I hope that when you in turn offer this coin for sale, that you will add the disclaimer that it has been cleaned.

The picture he took looked great. That is a lesson to me.

I looked through her other auctions and, although she states some of her coins are cleaned, that doesn't necessarily mean that she can spot one. I think those coins that she is selling as cleaned could be ones that she dipped herself. Overall, I don't think she's trying to scam. She has had a couple of other transactions where emails went unanswered. I would suggest pulling her info from eBay and giving her a phone call. If she has aol, she may not be getting all of her emails. Just a suggestion.

Here is what I suggest. If he does not answer your emails, or he won't give you a refund, simply give him a negative feedback, saying the coin was cleaned, that way all the people who view his products will be weary that they might get a coin that has been cleaned, on the other hand, he can turn right around and give you negative feedback... If you want to play it safe, don't put any feedback at all, just make sure you let others know that he is a rip off, and to not buy from there again, you have to be very weary about this kind of thing while shoppin through ebay, most of the time it isn't always avoidable, if I have the slightest idea that the coin in the picture could possibly be cleaned, I make it a point to get in contact with the seller to find out, if I don't, I do NOT bid on the item, even if it could sure be a heck of a deal, when in doubt, don't.

Don't you think that this is bad example? Seems to me that the whole point of the feedback is to offer the next potential customer a heads up. I have heard that many "power" sellers use the whole "return a neg feedback" as a tool to keep their rating high.

While it may come as a backlash, at some point people will need to stand up and do what is right. Just one humble opinion.
