Depending on what you're buying there might not be a lot of fakes. Are you into silver bullion or coins?
Pay attention to the Feedback score. If the seller has been naughty, someone has probably groused about it!
Derker is right! Also check how much feedback they have. If they don't have a lot be wary. And almost never buy if someone is selling from China.
You should also stick to certified coins from grading services like PCGS and NGC until you're more experienced. Chris
Don't be afraid to buy from smaller guys with 300-1000 positive feedback. Make sure they are selling feedback and not buyers. I find they tend to answer any questions you have faster and since they don't sell thousands of items a day they can better serve you. Stick to buying NGC/pcgs/anacs graded coins first until you become more knowledged in your certain areas of coinage you choose to explore.
Also use a service such as PayPal to pay for your items. EBay has a good return policy for items you get that aren't what you expected and since PayPal has split from EBay, you actually have double protection.
Or if they've had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a schmuck, they may have paid the price for it in poor feedback. Unfortunately it can and often does work both ways. ........... Never assume that feedback, positive or negative, means that much or really tells you much of anything. For every negative left by a fair, reasonable, and educated individual, there will be ten or more others left by inconsolable idiots, and the same can be said of positives. Some of the biggest Dreck peddlers on ebay also just happen to have stellar feedback; just take a few moments and think about how this can be.. With ebays present and ridiculously buyer coddling policies, it doesn't really matter what (how low) a seller's number of feedback may be, so don't worry about not dealing with someone unless they've X sales. Ebay isn't going to let them run off with your money, and do keep in mind that everyone must start somewhere... that guy with a whopping three seller feedback may be your fellow collector, while the guy with tens of thousands could simply be up to his neck in swill. The reality is that the biggest risk ebay buyers have is themselves even though most will never admit it. A few common sense precautions are likely to make your buying experience a pleasant one... don't buy what you do not know or understand, don't allow yourself to be suckered in by the dream of a "deal", if it looks too good to be true it probably isnt, etc, etc, etc.
There are many sellers who have been selling since the late 90's on ebay and those are the people to buy from, that is if you are afraid of being scammed.
As others have suggested... look at selling feedback. That's pretty much the most reliable thing to judge by. There are plenty of honest sellers on this site, (ahem).
I've never been scammed buying or selling coins on Ebay. Just watch out for dreck and be aware that a PCGS or NGC slab is not a guarantee that the coin doesn't have problems. Pictures have a way of hiding defects that could make the coin a low end or borderline details grade even if it is slabbed with a straight grade. Ebay auctions are a dumping ground for that kind of stuff.
A prospective buyer may have the opportunity to view photos from NGC or PCGS by checking the cert # to make sure that the seller's photos have not been doctored in any way. Chris
into bullion more then coins but i will purchase a coin if its a deal or something i can trade for bullion
