Apparently Ebay has changed their info on bidders, I just noticed it this morning: "As the internet evolves, eBay continues to strike a balance between preserving transparency and protecting our Community of members. eBay has decided to change how bid history information is displayed so bad guys cannot target bidders with fake offers using this information. In certain cases, some bidders will no longer be able to view Bidder User IDs on the Bid History page. Your User ID will be shown only to you and the seller of the item you're bidding on. Other members will see an anonymous name, such as Bidder 1, applied consistently to the Bid History page." So, now we can't warn bidders if something is a fake!
But apparently the policy is not in effect for all coins and lots. Some still show the bidders' names and some do not. No apparent rhyme or reason.
eBay has decided to change how bid history information is displayed so good guys cannot warn bidders of fake offers using this information, because it affects our profits. This is what it should really say.
I think once bidding hits a dollar amount threshold, the aliases kick in. And I'm with the "protect our profits" explanation also...
Although I do feel in all honesty that Ebay does very little to protect the consumer against fraud in many cases, the question is, which is more harmful to users? Bad guys cannot targetting bidders with fake offers using this information or warning bidders if something is a fake? Also, I just saw the notice and can't believe the wording is, "eBay has decided to change how bid history information is displayed so bad guys cannot..." Bad guys? Sounds like it's written for a 7 year old.
I have to agree with this statement, and I'm an ebaY stockholder! This also brings up something that we do on another discussion board I belong to (chipboard.com). There, when we notice somebody with incorrect or dishonest listings, we write the seller explaining what the corrected listing should be. Most of the time the seller either revises the listing, or just pulls it. We have on numerous occasions written ebaY, and usually only got a letter back stating that they have no control over what a seller lists. Huh? I guess it's gonna take some poor schmo getting ripped off for a major amount, and a law suit, before ebaY finally listens to it's users. Look at the AOL lawsuits from the past! Oh, well... "Plus ces't change, plus ces't la meme chose". (Pardon my French)
I'd like to disagree but I cannot find a reason to. I've reported scams (sellers buying chinese junk cast arrowheads and turning around to list them as rare)... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140052299941 Note buyer in that auction, and then check his listings... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220058713872 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220058717011 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220057056765 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220057113541 Has some listed currently as well... as you can see Ebay did nothing to stop those auctions, and isn't stopping the current crop of garbage. I contact one of the bidders and he thanked me. Pictures below in case the auction listings expire. User traditionalsolutions37 with 100% feedback I've also reported obvious shill bidding (is it just me or do you NOT have people bid $100 in the middle of your auctions exactly 5 minutes apart?) that one was user porscheahmet who sells currency at unrealistic prices. My guess is that he shills them up to a ridicuolus level hoping some sucker will then submit *one more bid* to win it. He doesn't seem to bid up the notes anymore (instead he just lists them at 18 million with a best offer). While I'm probably the least violent person you'll ever meet, some people just need a good kick in the face.
Where in the world does this porscheahmet guy come up with these prices for that currency, that is totally outrageous and insane. No one in their right mind would ever pay those prices, although he does have an option to submit a best offer..lol. I was thinking of submiting an offer of $100 on one of those notes he has listed in the 6 figures just to see if I get a response...haha.
Waht?! You're not willig to pay $2,199,999 for a Black Eagle? *wink* I think I've submitted some $100 offers heh, no reply. I've also submitted some realistic offers to Anaerrrrrr....conda ? The expensive toned seller, no reply. Some within $100-$200 of the asking price. I won't bother again. I think some sellers on ebay just put up auctions because they enjoy putting things up for auction. Weeee... it's fun. What you can't see anymore was the bidding increments (shill bidding) in porscheahmet's auctions. It was obvious.
porsheahmet is also the guy with the bogus currency slabs, just look at his other lots on that page: The $10,000 bill obverse has Choice unc 63, reverse says CU 60; 1917 $1 obverse has choice unc 63, reverse says EF 45! A bogus listing? I think so. and eBay protects these idiots.
Actually, that's not part of the auction listing. It's confusing and I don't know why he does it, but... In addition to listing ridiculously expensive notes, he's also a crusader for CGA (Currency Grading and Authentication, Inc.) which has been (at least in the past) a notorious overgrader just like many of the second-tier coin graders people complain about. He attempts to discredit that notion and show how great CGA is (but he doesn't have an interest in it somehow*wink*) by doing some side-by-sides. In the first one, he's saying that CGC (either the original name for CGA or he's just trying to discredit PMG) graded the note EF45 while PMG graded the same note as CU63. In the second one, the top one is a PMG Gem UC69 while CGA graded the same note Gem UC68 (and of course, PMG is wrong). That's my favorite one though as he put, "Who graded this note? Stevie Wonders???" What an idiot. In the third one, he's saying that PMG (another new grading company) graded it CU63 while CGA correctly graded it CU60 Restored (seems to me that neither is right on that one if it's been... restored). Like I said, he's got an interest in it... "You cannot deny the quality and experience of the oldest and most accurate U.S. paper money grading company... <insert ad here> "
Here's another interesting link, feedback left for porscheahmet by a buyer named wanttosoar.. http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...t&memberid=wanttosoar&items=-1&item=-1&de=off Now you're telling me this is a real, normal user just posting positive feedback? Sure. Apparently they all have a problem with user VCAVEMAN (though I'm not sure what their personal battle is, nor do I care).
samjimmy: Thanks for the note, I didn't realize that they were for comparison purposes. And the feedback was interesting reading, if you want to read a promo for a seller, a ton of bs.
Thanks for the link. That was well worth the read... BTW no match for "vcaveman" as an ID on that Internet Auction Community...
"BTW no match for "vcaveman" as an ID on that Internet Auction Community..." __________________ George: I could not find him on eBay? Also: samjimmy: what are you referring to?
Yes, Treashunt, I couldn't find that ID on eBay either. Sorry, being too silly I guess. There is another board I frequent that frowns upon the discussion of eBay, so I occassionaly use the phrase "Internet Auction Community" as a substitute. Over there, it's also called TASWDMH, for "The Auction Site We Don't Mention Here."
