1868 EXTREME DOUBLING Shield Nickel -- MAKE US AN OFFER! #O2481 I'm not finding this one especially plausible. Check out the C and S in CENTS -- I haven't seen that sort of "broken-off pieces" look in either legit or fake coins. Does it look familiar to anyone else? And yet, this looks like a legitimate seller. And I'm running on way too little sleep.
Interesting. These are both known varieties for Shield Nickels - have a look at the Reverse of 1868 hub varieties here: http://www.shieldnickels.net/top20/reverseOf68.html The reverse linked here is FS-902, and PCGS attributes it. The obverse is the former (don't know what they're calling it today) FS-003.8. See one here: http://coins.ha.com/itm/shield-nick...-20518.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 Near as I can tell, those two dies aren't known together on the same coin. Interesting. And yeah, the seller is legit. I watch his Lincolns.
Most likely real, but guarantee they want accept offer. I've tried to buy some of their stuff that was over priced made offer even explained why I felt it was more than fair rejected every time.
I used to buy a lot of his stuff. He'll accept an offer about $3.00 below his asking price and that's about it. He's high, but he's got a lot of inventory and he is legit.
This pattern is specifically listed in the CPG and is one of the more common 1868, reverse of 68 patterns. As someone has pointed out, this is pattern 2 of the 5 or 6 variations of the reverse of this coin. I haven't previously seen one with a DDO, but there is little in the shield nickel set that would surprise me. Check it with the Shield Nickel Viewer by Howard Spindell.
The reverse variations of the rev of 68 are the result of a hub that was breaking down in stages. All of the rev of 68 dies were made with this same hub, so it is very possible to have multiple reverse dies for each hub stage. That would mean multiple obv dies paired with each rev stage. With all the DDO 1868 dies it would not surprise me to be able to find one with each of the rev stages.
This is a genuine coin with a two-broken-letter reverse as previous posters have noted. The DDO variety is not listed in CPG or Fletcher (it is not FS-003.8). I have it catalogued as S2-1011. It is also CONECA 23-O-IV. @Conder101: Yes, there are 1868 DDOs paired with one through four broken letters. And one with the transitional between 1 broken letter and 2 broken letters.
