Early US Silver Coinage

Hi friends
I'm needing a bit of info regarding the early silver market. Flowing, draped, capped seated and the works. Can anyone recommend certain dates, mints and grades for $250 or less per certified coin? I'm looking for info regarding pre-Civil War coinage.

The Red Book isn't enough to get started?

 

Yeah but... I'm past getting started. I already looked in my '19 RB but I would like a second opinion.

 

What is your target grade?

 

Red Book prices are ridiculously innacurate for this type of material.

 

Minimum VF

Yeah your right, a tad ambitious Let me adjust my scenario.
$250 per and F15?
I could do details on the tougher stuff but straight grade is preference

 

Off the top of my head you could get a straight grade VF 1834 or 1835 JR6 Capped Bust and 1842-O Seated Dime in your price range. Draped Bust, even in F15 that sounds ambitious. I'm starting with Dimes because it is what I know best.

 

To aid in a bit more explanation. I'm looking for a type set coin. Not a early date set. So I'm looking for something with high eye appeal so that's why I would prefer minimum VF20. I said $250 but if that isn't possible, well details are a maybe.

I figured as such. I'd shoot for the Capped Bust Dime and Seated Dime first. Draped Bust will be almost unobtainable even details, in that grade. Above Fine, they're ridiculously hard to even find problem free. And Capped Bust isn't too far behind. Early Coinage is plagued with problems.

 

I would definitely have to sacrifice on grade, I can't really go over 300 realistically.

 

Nonsense. Just stay in school and it will come. Unless you get married and/or have kids first, lol.

You a right about the dimes. Been checking capped bust dimes on Heritage past results and there were a few XF40s that would match my price range,

 

Most capped bust halfs will be doable.

Go ahead and forget about basically anything with the flowing hair design.

Bust dollars you can forget about too.

1806 or 1805 quarters you could get like a FR 2 for that budget maybe an AG 3 on eBay.

Capped bust half dimes shouldn't be an issue

Seated dollars you might be able to sneak out an F for that money or slightly above on some later dates. If you are open to the entire seated date range the other denominations won't be a problem

Capped bust dimes there's some options after 1814. As far as the rest of dimes go forget about anything before that $250 wouldn't sniff any of the 1700s or heraldic eagle dates aside from maybe a details really low grade 1807.

 

Capped Bust Dimes are delicious. But proceed with caution and learn the series and how to identify problem Coins- there's a LOT of them floating around in problem free slabs. This is why early U.S. Coins are challenging.
