Being new to this forum, I would like to know how to research and evaluate an 1833 10c. coin w/full shield, but no wing feathers on reverse and the second "3" seems higher on the date. Would like some additional source data references for all US dimes along with valuations. Thanks for the help
There is a "last 3 high" variety of the 1833 dime, but it does not carry a premium over the regular 1833. Unless perhaps you're in the Uncirculated grades.
There are two die marriages with the high 3 obverse, JR-5 and JR-7. JR-5 is common, but JR-7 is rare. Check out this link and scroll down to 1833 to find pictures of both die marriages. Posting pictures would help with estimates on its grade. The standard reference for the series is “Early United States Dimes, 1796-1837,” which was published in 1984. I own this book and enjoy it, though it can be difficult to find and pricy. The “Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide” came out in 2015 and is cheaper and easier to get and is primarily intended to be a variety identification guide. I don’t own this one. https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plus/united-states/dimes/2685/
Thanks for the info.... Cannot provide a photo. No camera! I will review all comments provided here. Thanks again for the input!
The easiest way to tell the difference between the JR-5 and the JR-7 is the relationship between the I in PLURIBUS and the second T in STATES above it. On the common JR-5 the I is located under the far right side of the T. On the rare (R-5) JR-7 it is located under the left side of the T.
