Early 2011 Unc/Proof Release

I haven't had much time lately to keep up with CT so I apologize in advance is this topic has already been discussed....

Back in September, I recall reading a US Mint announcement about the 2011 Unc/Proof sets being issued in January (instead of July/August).

That's great...but I was wondering what that might mean for the 2010 silver sets. Will the 2010 sets still be offered for a full year?

Given rising price of silver and the static price of silver proof sets, I would expect that the the price for the 2011 silver sets would have to be greater than the 2010 silver sets.

It they keep selling the 2010 silver proof sets into 2011, they would have to raise prices to match the price of the 2011 silver proof sets...the Mint wouldn't sell two sets at different prices, would they?

So I was thinking...one of two things is likely to occur...either,

    1. The price for 2010 Silver Proof sets go up to match the 2011 prices, or
    2. The 2010 silver sets have an early "Sell Out" ...and possibly the Unc and Clad Proof sets, as well.

Either way, it might be a good idea to pick up some extra sets before the end of the year. :thumb:

2010 Sales figures as of 07Dec2010...

    Unc: 514,498
    Clad Proof: 978,016
    Silver Proof: 476,999

The MintNewsBlog just published the prices for the 2011 US Mint products. The Silver Proof Sets are increasing from $56.95 to $67.95.

Coin World reports that the Mint plans to continue selling the 2010 silver proof sets throughout 2011. It'll be interesting to see if the prices for the 2010 sets stay the same.

So far, they haven't gone up.

There seems to be some confusion here. The mint is not producing any more and is currently out of stock on 2010 UNC ASE ref. Mint Website.

  5. I cannot imagine the 2010 silver proof sets being sold throughout 2011 especially at a discount to the 2011 silver proof set. The 2010 silver proof set mintage is now 514,083 as of 1/4/11. I am guessing that these will suddenly sell out right before the 2011 silver proof sets go on sale later this month. TC

Sometimes the mint misses a stroke. Remember back in 2007 when gold began to climb and the mint stopped taking orders for one ounce gold eagles? Well, aparently they forgot about the gold buffalo because that remained on sale. So I bought one. Soon after that, if I remember correctly, they pulled sales on the buffalo too.

That was the original point of the thread...it seems like right now might be a good time to buy a few extra 2010 Silver Proof sets because either....

    1. The 2010 sets will continue to be sold, but at 2011 prices (up $11), or
    2. The Mint will discontinue the 2010 Silver Proof set, in which case, they will have an extremely low mintage (relative to past years).

    A third possibility exists...

    3. The Mint will continue selling the 2010 sets at their current price ($56.95) along side the 2011 sets ($67.95) since the 2010 sets were produced when silver cost less.

It doesn't seem likely the Mint would pass their commodity profit on to the collector, so I pretty much excluded #3.

Btw, the US Mint reported to Coin World that the 2010 Silver proof sets would be sold throughout 2011. I haven't seen that anywhere else, though.

I read in Coin World that, when asked, the Mint claimed they would continue selling the 2010 Silver Proof set throughout 2011. There was no mention as to what the price might be.

I would love to see the 2010 sets "sell out" when the 2011 sets become available. Do you think there's a chance of that happening?

I think the possibility exists but if that is indeed the case I think the 2010 sets will sell out quick.

I could be wrong, but didn't they sell newly released (higher priced) First Spouse coins along with (lower priced) older issues one or two years ago?

The only place you will be able to still get 2010 ASE's is in the secondary market at a price that is more than was the Mint's original selling price. Right now the focus is on the 2011 release, which will be released early this year in January 2011 . As a matter of fact, I think if you search the Coinupdate site , you might find where this information was published.

1/11: regular proof set. 1/25: silver proof set.

2010 silver proof still being offered on the mint site. If I had the extra money I'd buy a few more, but the dance card is full at the moment and there's a whole bunch of stuff coming out (from the mint) in quick succession.

You talked me right into it :)....just ordered one (along with the 1 1/2 bronze Lincoln medal). I also am a 1 silver proof set per year subcriber. That new price has got me debating it though

I subscribe to two and usually pick up two more down the road. This year I just stuck with the subscription.

That Lincoln bronze is a nice medal. I bought one a few months ago....:)

OK folks...less than a week to go...the Mint begins selling 2011 Silver Proof Sets @$67.95
    per set on 25Jan2011!

So what do you think is going to happen?

    A. The 2010 Silver Proof Sets "Sell Out" with a final mintage of 523,514

    B. The 2010 Silver Proof Sets will continue to be sold @$56.95 per set :kewl:

    C. The 2010 Silver Proof Sets will increase in price to $67.95 per set

Perhaps I'm the only one...but I think we're about to see a very interesting decision by the Mint! :thumb:

I'm thinkin' "B". The sets will be sold at the original issue price. But there's a limited amount left on hand in the mint vault. It will sell out very quickly.

I think the Mint will have to raise the prices on the 2010 Silver Proof sets if they are going to continue production late into 2011 . I don't believe they will and the issue will go to a " Sold out " status no later than the release date of the 2011 sets. It's terribly hard to keep up with the Mint these days and second guessing what they will do , it's just like believing in your fortune cookie fortune.

It has happened before. Like I related earlier in this thread, they continued to sell first spouse coins at a reduced (original issue) price while the newer issue ones were sold at a higher price based on the rise in pm's. The 2010's will be sold at the original mint issue price till they sell out. When they sell out only time will tell. I think they'll sell out quickly.

I remember you saying that, but I've been buying FS coins for a while and I don't remember there ever being a time when the Mint deviated from their Price Guide. Details?

If they sell out the 2010 Silver Proof Sets at (or around) this low mintage, the "real" 2010 ATB silver coins (the small ones) will be HOT HOT HOT!
