Noticed the “slash” on the eagle on this ‘71 Kennedy. Possibly done at the mint or is it post mint damage?

How do you determine between the two? 76CDEF33-153E-424C-82C0-A319D601E8DC.jpeg 9207AFE9-72AC-4489-93E1-E0C2E52C50B8.jpeg 06864D79-9C97-46F1-9C01-AF881FF7DB29.jpeg 021C0842-2CF0-49C7-ADC7-6E8DE502A616.jpeg

It looks like a gouge to me. In spite of the fact that your images are blurry, I think I see coin metal pushed out of the gouge onto the shield.

In the future, you should lay the coin on a flat surface and use both hands to steady the camera if you don't have a copy stand or tripod.

I teal detect 5-7 days a week. I actually wear gloves but I had to do a couple of barehanded recoveries this week. I know how terrible my hands look but at least I earned them honestly.

Thanks but when I do lay them flat I seem to get worse pictures. A question of lighting.

See if you can find a couple of gooseneck table lamps at a local thrift shop and place them at 10 & 2 o'clock at a 45 degree angle to the subject so the light bounces away from the lens.

A die gouge would be RAISED on the struck coin (die is the mirror image).
A strike-through would be DEPRESSED on the struck coin (the object takes up space during the strike)
A post-strike damage will move metal around.
