I was approached to purchase an exp. Planchet coin from around 1964 for 800. Coin is in pic. I've noticed 1 type made is silver clad, 1 is 75% nickel 25% copper bonded to copper and this 1 is 90%/ 10%. I found a bit of info about the first 2 types and both are rare but not the 3rd. Does anyone have any info on it? Thanks
http://uspatterns.com/p5389.html Only 9 believed to have been struck. Not strictly a coin, because it doesn't have a denomination or the proper legends, but a neat piece nonetheless.
Looks like the slab is an error, lol. I caught myself writing "Au" for my Silver abbreviation on a couple of coins I had. Nobody is perfect
Following the NGC database numbers show 8 in the same submission, 2 MS65s, the rest MS64s... So that's one person with 8 of the supposed 9 (edit: at the time of submission)
It's not really a US mint product per se. It's a trial strike commissioned by the US Mint and produced by DuPont.
Two sold in 2006 via Heritage, MS-64 for $950 (1092.50 w/BP), the other, a MS-63, for $650 ($747.50 w/BP) ... That being said, no clue as to value now. Seems like a thin market. If you like it though, price seems decent, but might have a hard time selling it if you don't like it later.
