I'm sure alot of us here use TD to dump and we all know that their bags fill at $100 which is crazy IMHO. It's a waste of resources (plastic bags), money, and time. Anyway, I was reading some posts on a CRHing forum and someon in the North East was dumping lets say $1500 in halves each day at one TD branch. If you're out there and reading this, PLEASE STOP! Spread it around bit. You're abusing the system and they cut you off, which they should have. I know TD could up the limit to say $500 per bag and it would help everyone out, but they have not. Stop using up all the bags so when I come in and dump there are still some bags left for my coins. Help a brother out. I dumped $1000 last week at TD, it took forever (45 minutes) because the machine kept jamming because the teller did not put it together correctly when a bent half got stuck in there. I should have been more careful about cashing in an abused half and I paid the price. I thanked the tellers numerous times and they won't see more for at least two weeks and the next time I show my face, I'll have donuts and let's say $500 to dump. I only have 3 branches within a 30 mile radius that have coin counters. I rotate my dumps so I don't upset the apple cart so to speak. I also send my coin out in bags to be counted and credited. I do this because I want to be able to hunt for a long time. I'm not in it to abuse the system and get cut off. I have to dump $500 in halves this weekend. I'm driving 8 additional miles (16 additional round trip) to dump at a branch that I have not been to in months. When I dump D's & Q's at my local bank I go there once a week with $250 or $500 and they never ever have to change the bag. They just cash the ticket and I'm gone. I'm one of the easiest transaction of the day. I go there with treats sometimes too to keep them happy. This week I bought Godiva for three different banks I go to. They were all very happy and enjoyed the sweet treat I left with them. Does anyone else agree with me. The more people abuse the system the quicker everyone is going to get cut off. I don't want to stroll into my local TD branch and have them say sorry, no bags left, we can't cash in you halves after I just drove 30 miles to get there. HOTN
Unfortunately some people don't care about where they dump or how often. The problem will be solved by the banks as it gets to become an issue that's costing them money because they have to pay for those coins to be delivered and picked up. I wouldn't be surprised to see more banks start charging fee's to order boxes and higher fee's/limitations on how much you can dump. I friend of mine is a branch manager at my local closest bank which just happens to be a TD, she's told me before how the counting machines or 'penny arcades' are supposed to be for the average Joe with his change jar not people mining for coins. The banks consider this abuse and she's stated she's received internal memo's on this type of thing before about what they can do to stop the practice including closing a customers account in the extreme. It's wise to always take care of your tellers be it some chocolates, coffee giftcards, etc. The whole I scratch your back you scratch mine works very well in allowing you to continue hunting without issue but some people have no sense or tact.
Tell them to reuse the bags... The branches I dump at put $500 in each bag. Just lift the lever and push it back down without taking the bag off.
Now that is a great suggestion and you have some great tellers there. I practically beg them to not use so many bags and point out to them that all other denominations fill at $500 (dimes and quarters anyway) why not the halves. Why not use the bag twice maybe. But they continue to change the bag at every $100 because they don't know any better and I guess are just doing what they are told. That would cut down significantly on dump times if they would do this for me. They keep lifting the lever and I work on Penny, we would be done in 5 minutes flat. It would also be alot less work for them because they would have to log one or two bags in there book rather than 5 or 10 bags. HOTN
I talked to a manager at two of the braches to get that done. They agreed it was more efficient and went ahead and told their tellers that anytime someone dumps a lot of change, to get at least $300 in each bag, up to $500 per. Some managers are thick-headed though...
You dumped a $1000 in halves at one bank and are preaching to spread it around? Hahaha. I split 1 box of $500 in halves between 2 banks. I have about 6 TD's that I goto once a week so that makes it easier. For bags, I usually mention "another teller helped me out last time and just reset the lever." This works once in awhile.
Yes I am, the difference is, I only go there once every two or three weeks, not every day dumping $1500. Typically I bag $500 to be sent out and cash in $500. It takes me 30 minutes to get to a TD with a coin counting machine, so I have to dump larger amounts and then not visit them for a couple weeks. I bring them donuts, ready the bags for them, and work the Penny....all while holding my daughter on my hip. I'm not in an area where there are plenty of TD with machines otherwise it would be alot easier on them and me. There's only 3 within 30 minutes of me all in different directions. So I may sound hipocritical, but I think $500 - $1000 every two or three weeks is not abuse of the system. I'd say I'm at the limit of ****ing them off and my saving grace is my cute daughter and the treats I bring them. I'll have another talk with them and see what they say about "resetting the lever". It's worth a shot for sure. HOTN
Let me also say that I do agree with you about not abusing the system. I usually ask whomever is changing the bags if anyone else fills the halves bags. I even have discussions with the head teller of my buy bank telling her to let me know if there is ever any talk about my orders. I hear too many stories of banks starting to charge for ordering boxes.
After my first fiasco of a dump with the bag set at $100, the asst. manager called around and found out how to set the bag at $300 for halves. Still it never fails, the bag fills up or there's an error message, so I just let the tellers know as soon as I walk in that I'm gonna need them to open the machine up. Now that we've figured out how Penny works, the teller can adjust the bag when it jams while I watch the screen for the error to clear out and then restart the counting process. I do need to drop off some goodies for them though, no one there has ever hassled me about dumping $1000 in halves every weekend. I have another TD with a counter close by, but that branch has an older machine that really doesn't like halves and the tellers there aren't as friendly or helpful about troubleshooting it. I only use that branch when Penny is broken at my main TD branch. Some jerk threw a bunch of screws and crap into it and it was down for a couple weeks recently. There was a screwdriver bit in it today, but luckily the screen caught it. On another note, what's the average amount y'all lose to counting errors when dumping? I keep up with the amount that should be in the box and compare to the printout to figure a % error.
I lose approximately 0% due to counting errors because I count and re-roll all of my coins myself. What this means is even if I am shorted a roll I won't lose a cent because I will put that exact amount right back into the roll. Sometimes I empty out coins from many rolls into a pile to go through, other times I go through rolls one at a time to make re-rolling easier or to check for accuracy. I went through a few rolls of pennies today that only had 47 or 48 cents in it, I'm not losing out on money due to incompetency from the people who turned them in that way. If I use a counting machine I will have no choice but to eat the loss. Canadian coins that I find in rolls and don't want will be rejected by these machines as well, atleast with hand rolling I can put them back into rolls to avoid taking a loss. I just don't know why re-rolling isn't more popular on here. Maybe using machines has developed into a form of habit or routine for roll searchers but is it really worth the headache of using counting machines that jam up and get full all the time? I can re-roll an entire box within a reasonably short amount of time by counting in three's. Before you know it you've reached 40 or 50 coins and they're ready to be put in a roll.
I don't reroll because TD doesn't take them rolled, it's thier policy that coin has to go thru the machine and into the bag. I hope to earn enough trust there that they may let me dump directly into a bag for cash or account credit, that way I avoid the potential for counting machine losses. Also, re-rolling encourages the bank to tape the box up and send it out to the next person that requests it. I've received those boxes with all the BWR's slit open where they'd been checked for silver and it's a crappy feeling.
Because rerolling is time consuming. Rerolling $2k in halves every week would probably take me what? 4+ hours? Takes me 30 minutes to dump that into a machine and get it counted... including travel time. That's why I don't reroll. If TD starts shutting me down, I'll probably pick a couple PNC's and First Niagara's to dump at.
I agree with what you're saying. It's important to be courteous and understand the way the banking system works if you're going to sort coin. It's also important to know the regional differences because they really defer based on where you're at. I hunt halves in Washington and quite a bit in southern California. In Washington I use Bank of America, Chase and U.S. Bank. The only request the branch managers and vault tellers have is that I don't bring the coins back into their location. They will order me $10,000 as a maximum due to their coin safe size. In California I could only order $3,000 from each bank. I usually order $3000 worth from four banks and take them all back into one bank to return them. I re-rolled them for a year which took a considerable amount of time. I was really happy when Bank of America began offering me the poly bags they offer to their vendors. Now, I simply hunt and empty them into the bags. I refuse to use the coin-counting machines like Coinstar or similar services because it cuts into my profit margin. Unlike in Washington, the returns in California are amazingly simple - I go to a bank location whose main customers are small-mid sized businesses, these banks deal with transactions like this on a regular basis...so no raised eyebrows, no checking with the manager to see how to process the transaction, and to my surprise the funds were available in my account immediately as they treated it as a simple cash exchange/transaction. In Washington the money is sent to the vault and counted, then deposited and since there is a high turnover in tellers here, the new tellers have to run to their managers to find out how to do the transaction which can be time consuming.
Sometimes I'll bring in $500 but have another $500 in the car. If things are going well and their not busy I'll ask them if they mind if I bring in the other bag. They usually say something like were here all day, bring them in. HOTN
Sorry to hijack. This isn't about TD Bank, but I found a bank in my town with a free sorter (as opposed to the supermarket, which charges over 9% and takes forever). I went in to cash in about 30 dollars worth of pennies for the first time. I asked her about their accounts. She assured me that I don't need to have an account there. I told her I'd feel guilty if I didn't. I said I'd be dumping pennies there probably only about once every week or two. She was nice and said I can come in as often as I like and it's no big deal. I'm still going to open an account there. If I start dumping coins more often I'll do what the OP suggested and take in some doughnuts now and then. I see people using the supermarket coin machines quite often, but I am going to be stingy and NOT tell them about the free sorter at this particular bank.
connecticut only has 3 banks state wide that will take loose coins :/ i gotta roll them all back up. good thing i pay mom to do it lmao.. JK
