Well, I'm currently bidding on this Druids head half penny from Anglesey, wales. The last Pagan stronghold which was utterly destroyed by Tacitus. Please give my your opinions. Steve, what do you have to say? Take Care Ben
Very nice I am not sure if it is one of the parys mining company ones though they have Angalsey on them, and I do know someone else produced a very similar design I think this one might be EDGE: "PAYABLE IN LONDON BRISTOL & LANCASTER" Issued for general circulation MINTAGE: 103,000 DIESINKER: Thomas Wyon MANUFACTURER: William Lutwyche & Peter Kempson
It's North Wales not Anglesey, D&H 1. De Orc has the mintage engraver and manufacturer correct. (That mintage is for all four die varieties of this type D&H 1 - 4. That is die varieties not edge varieties. Since there is a common edge variety for each of those you can figure a roughly equal mintage of each so there were about 25,000 D&H 1's struck.) These were not made for the Parys mine though, they were imitation pieces made for general circulation. In effect a contemporary counterfeit. The D&H 1 comes with nine different edge varieties. Kempson and Lutwyche were just using whatever leftover planchets they had on hand. Value is going to vary widely depending on what the edge inscription is. The edge De Orc listed is the most common along with CURRENT EVERYWHERE. A plain edge is scarce, and anything else is either Rare or Extremely Rare. I'd say a common edge variety in that condition is probably an $18 to $25 coin retail. this one has that stain on the back that may hurt it a bit. I think the "nick" at the bottom of the Obv may be a planchet flaw and not damage.
Thank you Condor, somewhere I have a nice booklet on tokens LOL but could I find it I was trying to work from memory and also what bits I had stored on the puter LOL I am allways amazed by the veriety of Druid's Head tokens that there are out there & if I could afford it would start another collection LOL Did you win it Ben?
