so here it is. out of pocket change. any comments are appreciated. and is it worth keeping? is it worth $? i know its sad we have to base keeping something on if its worth money, but what can you do? actually, i do have one question. as an ex machinist i would think that dies are tempered steel an therefore very brittle. so why wouldnt a crack shoot straight across or just plain shatter the whole die?

I'd keep it. You don't see too many of the modern quarters with die cracks.

Eventually the die does shatter. Here's a cent that would probably be one of the last few that was made with the particular die. Notice the die cracks all over it:

thats a nice one. that brings up a question. when a die shatters, does it ever happen that some of it falls out and some of it stays attached? that would lead to interesting partial strikes.
