Still new at searching Kennedys for doubled dies but I'm learning. I think I may have found something and hope someone can confirm my suspicion.
Yes, that exhibits definite doubling. Check yours against the CONECA master list here: http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1971-1994.htm#_1971-D Unfortunately, your coin appears to closely match the SDO-001 description. SDO is a seldom used description (because it seldom occurs). It stands for "Series Doubled Obverse" and means that every coin in that series exhibits the same doubling. This doubling is on the Master Die (or possibly even the Master Hub). Let me explain: The Master Hub makes the Master Die which makes the Working Hubs which make the Working Dies. Normally, a hub doubled coin is made when the Working Hub impresses the design into the Working Die. It takes at least two impressions to fully transfer the design, and if the second impression is slightly off (for a number of reasons), then the result is a doubled die. However, if this slight misalignment occurs when the Master Hub is impressing the Master Die, then all of the subsequent hubs and dies made from that master will exhibit the same doubling. Essentially, what this means is that *all* of the dies exhibit this same doubling (of course, all of the coins also therefore exhibit this doubling). It's still cool, and still a great example of genuine doubling... its just not anything special, unique, or valuable.
Hey thanks all for the great feedback! Any idea what the actual variety might be? I couldn't find a match to it in the quick searches I've made.
Great answer for me, an "Ah Ha!" moment. Thank you! I have visited the CONECA list previously and am always wishing there were images to illustrate the varieties. Is's somewhat confusing to me, deciphering all their codes.
What you have is an OVD-003 (Obverse Die Variety) 71D Kennedy which is MD (Master Die doubling), not a doubled die, and can be found on almost all Kennedy half ODV-003 from P, D and S’s. This doubling also can be found on the P, D, and S’s for the ODV-003 for 1972, so it is designated as Series Doubled SDO-001 in the CONECA Master Listings. Note the ODV-002 is referred to as the weak R of LIBERTY, and the ODV-003 is referred to as the strong R of LIBERTY. http://www.varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1971-1994.htm#_1971-D Larry Nienaber
This possibility actually crossed my mind, in part because of you. Unfortunately you didn't arrive in time to stop me from making a fool of myself, but thank you nonetheless.
