Who is James Earle Fraser? You're right! He's the designer of the Indian Head obverse/Bison reverse (Buffalo) nickel. His initial "F" is on the obverse of the coin., But, did you know his wife Laura Gardin Fraser was an artist and sculptor in her own right? James and Laura prepared the designs for the Oregon Trail Memorial Half Dollar.

Before earning this distinction, Laura had the privilege of designing the 1922 Grant Memorial Half Dollar and it's companion the Grant Gold Dollar. Both coins were struck to commemorate the Centenary of Ulysses S. Grant's birth.

Laura, also, prepared the obverse and reverse models for the Half Dollar honoring the 100th Anniversary of Fort Vancouver which is located in the state of Washington.

This leads us to another strange occurrance at the San Francisco Mint. The Fort Vancouver Commemorative Half Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1925. Look at the photo of the coin pictured in your red book, in the North American Coins Guide or on any internet coin photo Gallery such as www.coinfacts.com or www.usmint.gov There is no "S" mint mark on the coin!.
