hey guys i just wanted to know how to tell if a double sided coin is just a novelty item or not... i have a double sided half dollar and i hear that people take two coins and cut them in half somehow and put them together but i don't see a seam on my coin... it makes me wonder if the coin is in a shell of a fake half if that makes any sense...if so how to i get them to separate? the half is dated 1994 and has a D on one side and P on the other lol so i guess a novelty item ? anyways thanks in advance :)

Typically the reverse of one coin is cut out inside the rim on a lathe. This leaves the coin looking like a pie shell. Then the reverse of the second coin is removed and the rim of the remaining obverse is removed. Next the two pieces are put together (the smaller diameter obverse fitting inside the pie shell of the other coin).

If you look carefully you should be able to see a seam along the inside of the rim on one side.

This site gives a fairly good explanation along with photos.
